First up, the start of a brand new month means we’ve got another designer-led challenge to get that mojo-a-flowin’ — just for YOU! This month’s hostess with the mostess is STACY MORGAN! Can we get a Woot-Woot? Without further ado...

HOW TO PLAY: In the words of Stacy...
Cut it out girlfriend! No really, cut it out. To play in this month’s Power & Spark “Cut It Out” Challenge, all you need to do is cut around your blooms (or main image) to add that extra “ooomph!” to impress the recipient with your mad cutting skills.
Want to see one way Stacy Cut It Out? Here’s a peek at the card that inspired this scissorific challenge! Look at those lush Camellias all colored up in fussy cut glory!

THE OFFICIAL RULES:
  • Use Power Poppy stamps if you have them, but if you don’t, this is a great way to WIN them!
  • Link your creation below using our Linky
  • Please mention Power Poppy in YOUR blog or gallery post with a link back to THIS challenge
  • The winner will receive a free clear or digital stamp set of your choice from the Power Poppy Shop
  • Enter as many cards as you’d like, as long as they fit the theme of the challenge!
  • Deadline to enter is May 31 at 8:00pm EST. At that point, we'll draw the winner randomly and make the announcement right here on the first Friday of  June.

GOOD LUCK HAPPY STAMPERS! Get those scissors ready to do a bit of fussy cutting and nip, tuck, snip and slice your way to artistic greatness you card-making phenoms, you!

Moving on...

It’s time — drum roll please — to reveal the name of the lucky winner of a stamp set of their choice for entering our oh-so-popular POP of PASTEL Challenge for April! We had over 50 softly-shaded entries and Random.org drew the number 26, which means the lucky lady is...

.~* ANGELICA SCHMIDT *~.

Not only was Angelica lucky, she was rather brilliant too with her entry! Look very closely at her card, as she used just a portion of Power Poppy’s Arranging Roses Digital Stamp and she blew up the rose and scissors portion to take center stage. That is some seriously cool stuff. Creative and lovely all at the same time! We love seeing folks think outside the box:

Congratulations Angelica!!! Email us at bloom@powerpoppy.com with the stamp set you would like to receive along with your snail mail addy and we’ll get your winnings on their way—or let us know if you’d prefer a digital set. You choose!

Well, that was a whirlwind of fun so far, eh? And... it’s not over!!! Now we can share the link list for our beloved Bloomies so that you can hop, skip and jump on over to their blogs to see what they whipped up on this fine Friday for all to see!

Thanks so much for stopping by and spending part of your day with us. It makes our hearts happy! Enjoy all the day holds and we’ll see you back here soon, like hopefully on Monday, when we’ll showcase a fresh episode of Inspire Me Monday! Yours truly will be hosting and I have a quick and easy background technique that adds a touch of texture. See you then!

Inspire Me Monday - Photo Editing Part 2

Hello Power Poppy Friends!  It’s Christine with my monthly Inspire Me Monday Tutorial.  Today I’m back with Part Two of my Photography series looking at how to bring your card photos to life for online galleries and blogs.   Part 1 of this Series is found HERE.  Today we’ll be looking at Photo Editing, an important piece in showing off your hard work on-screen that you invested in creating a card.

I’ll be showing you how I edit my photos in iPhoto because I have Mac computer.  It’s a free photo editing software program that comes with Mac computers.  There are much more sophisticated programs out there (like Lightroom and Photoshop), but I wanted to show you that you can still make helpful edits without using professional software.  If you have a PC there are other free programs you can use like Picasa and Gimp that can get you similar results.  When I had a PC I used Picasa, and I know that our own Ally is great with Gimp.

So let’s start with a card I created with a combination of Power Poppy goodies;  I’ll show you step by step how I edit my photos to get them blog ready.

The card was created with our new and amazing Flowering Branches digi (for the sentiment) and then I stamped around the sentiment with various Power Poppy polymer sets:  Daffodils, Dynamic Duos:  Peonies and Tulips, and Lilac Time.  It’s my own spring garden!

Here is my photo straight out of the camera.  On my first part of this series I talked about how to make the most of your photography so you can check that tutorial for those steps.  I want to show you how I get it from this stage to blog ready with iPhoto.

You can see by this photo that the background is still a little dark, the photo is slightly crooked, the card needs cropping and the flowers look a little washed out (not how the card looks in person).  My whole goal in editing is to make the photo look as close to how it is in real life  - on screen.

First step....check the Brightness of your computer screen!  It seems so simple, but you can’t get a realistic representation of your photo if the brightness on your screen is too low.  Check on your computer how you can adjust the brightness.  On mine it’s on my keyboard, top left.

Next - remember that on most software programs there is always a button to undo or restore your photo back to the original state, so if you make a mistake in editing you can just start again.  No worries.

A lot of photo editing is also preference.  I wanted to make sure you hear that :).  Not everyone does or prefers things the same way, and you can see different editing styles by going to different blogs.  I’m going to show you some of my personal preferences.

I’ll be honest, one of my personal pet peeves is crooked photos.  It makes me get twitchy :)  So, one of my first steps after loading my photos is to straighten them.  At least one of my edges - either the top edge or the left edge is always straightened to align with the horizontal or vertical plane.

In iPhoto editing software you’ll find three tab menus on the upper right of your screen.  Quick Fixes, Effects, and Adjust.  Each has their own menu of selections in those screens.

For instance, in Quick Fixes you’ll find a place to rotate your photo, enhance your photo, fix red-eye (people shots), straighten your photos, crop and retouch.

Select Straighten from the Quick Fixes menu and a set of grid lines will appear in your screen.  Slide the slide to straighten the edges of your photo the way you want it to appear on-screen.

See to me, the orientation of this photo now is so much better.  I don’t have the twitchies anymore.  :)

Next Step - Cropping.  This is one of those personal preference things - some people prefer wider cropping with a lot of white space around their card.  I prefer a medium crop, about an inch on each side of my photo so that you have white space that is soothing around your card, and your attention can be on the details of the card.

In the Quick Fixes Menu you can click the Crop button and you can crop your photo either to specific constraints, or by dragging the outside corners in, generally I just pull my corners in to create even space around my card.

Above is my design with the cropping done.  If I didn’t like how the cropping looked, on the bottom of the screen in the right corner there is an “undo” button that I could use to go back to the pre-cropped picture.

Next is an important step to me,   Enhancing Your Photo.  There are a couple of ways you can accomplish this in iPhoto.  The first is a quick one, but I’ll be honest - it doesn’t always enhance perfectly, so I’ll also describe another way of doing it.

In the Quick Fixes Menu you’ll see an Enhance button.  When you click on it, your computer will automatically adjust the exposure, contrast, and saturation of the image.   Generally it does a pretty good job.  I always test it to see how it turns out.  Sometimes however it gets the results WAY off, so then I have to undo and do the adjustments manually.  When it works though - its a great quick fix.

What you’re looking for is realistic colours on your card, good overall saturation and contrast.

If using the Enhance button doesn’t get the effect that you’re looking for, in iPhoto go to the Adjust Menu and you’ll see a colour bar graph and then 3 slides for Exposure, Contrast and Saturation.  You can adjust the arrows on each side of the colour bar graph and also adjust the slides for Exposure, Contrast and Saturation.  Adjusting all of those slides manually allows you to give your photo the colouring and contrast you’re looking for.  As well, on the bottom area in that same menu you can see Temperature and Tint slides.  If your photo is too blue or yellow, you can make adjustments here.

And again - if you don’t like how your adjustments turned out - you can just click Undo on the bottom right of your screen, and it will back up to where you were previously.

Other Adjustments:  As I said in the first photography tutorial, I really like my whites in photos and backgrounds to be true white.  Even after edited, most people will find that their photos appear darker on their blog.  I know there’s some technical reason for that (probably to do with resolution, pixels and some other crazy computer speak), so I usually brighten up my photos a notch or two.  In the Effects Menu I press the Lighten button once or twice to brighten the photo.  This increases the overall brighteness of the card on the screen.

Next, if my photo still has some shadows in the background I’ll go into the Adjust Menu Screen and slide up the Shadows slide.  This removes some of the background shadows.

Final Touches:  Now I’ll start making final adjustments.  I like my photos to look crisp on screen, so in the Adjust Menu I’ll slide the sharpness up a little so there’s a crispness to the details.  I don’t adjust this too far because I want the photo to look natural - not overally edited.

In combination with the Sharpness I’ll also slide the Definition slide up a little too.

Then finally if there are any imperfections in the background (like if my background has a smudge or is dirty or has some dust that I didn’t notice I’ll use the Retouch button in the Adjust Menu and a little circle will come up with your cursor in the screen  (you can slide the circle to be smaller or larger).  I’ll just click the circle on the area in the background where there was dirt to clean it up.

So overall,  I like how this looks on the screen.  Next I’ll watermark my card photo and publish it to my blog.

Here is how the edited photo looks.  I really love how the layer of vellum softens the effect of the colours around the sentiment.

Here’s a final closeup.

I hope you have some new ideas of how you can make your photos show off all of your hard creative work!     Thanks for joining me again today!

Inspire Me Monday: Gift Sets (part one)

Good morning Peeps! Stacy here, with my first Power Poppy Inspire Me Monday. I am excited to be here today! I am going to sharing with you a quick gift box to display the beautiful creations you make for gifts. So grab a cup of coffee or tea and relax for a bit.

For those that have seen my name, you are aware that gift sets are very popular with me. Often I am asked how my gift sets are wrapped for the recipient. That really depends on who I am giving a gift set to, in all honesty. Several of my “go to” wrappings are gift boxes. One of my more typical is the standard box that I will share with you today. The wrapping doesn’t have to be complicated, it really can be easy peasy. There is always room for elaborate design for those “special gifts” that we can look at later. For now we’ll go with easy peasy. Let’s get started.

Supplies: Scissors, score tool, adhesive, stamp set, 2 pieces of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock solid or designer paper.

Step 1: Lets work with the base of the box first. Cut the first sheet of card stock 6 1/2" wide x 8 1/2" long. Score at 1 inch on all four sides of card stock as shown.

Step 2: Cut the 1 inch score line at the four corners as shown. These will adhere to the inside of the box to form the sides.

Step 3: Add adhesive to each of the tiny tabs and adhere to the inside of the box. This shows with one end formed.

Here is what you should have when all sides are adhered. Set this aside and let’s work with the lid for the box.

Step 4: For the lid, which is slightly larger than the base of the box, cut the second piece of card stock 6 5/8" wide x 8 5/8" long. For those like me who are “mathematically challenged” (ha ha) see the photos for card stock placement above. Score as you did in Step 2, at 1 inch on all four sides. Repeat Step 3 to form box sides.

Step 5: Here is the gift box ready to be decorated and displayed. A nice touch for the inside of the box is add a decorative piece of paper to the bottom so when they use all the cards they have a pretty interior left behind. Also gives them a great way to store other treasures and re-use the beautiful gift.

My finished gift box. Just a few simple layers of card stock and designer paper for the lid base. I stamped the Simply Camellias on white card stock and colored the blooms with various Copic markers. Die cut with a Spellbinders Oval shape that is layered on a green base decorative oval shape. Before adhering this to the lid, a few flourishing jewel decorations were added. Stamped my sentiment, added a butterfly, and voila!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared some of the coordinating cards that I made to fit into the box—here is a recap of  a few creations! Our April collection was the perfect springy idea for gift set that I wanted to create using the Daffodils, Lilac Time and Simply Camellias. They are similar in design which is what I adore about matching gift sets. Now we have a beautiful box and a wonderful gift hidden inside.

This box size can also accommodate other tiny gift ideas you might like to add, such as a coordinating book mark, tiny journal or note pad, chocolates etc. Don’t get me started on all the goodies you can put into this box. ;-)

Thanks for joining me today and hopefully this inspires and encourages you to give it a try. Have a wonderful day!

Stacy  :-)

April Digi Release Today: Flowering Branches

Good day to you!

I’m releasing a new set today that, wow, if you wanted to, you could possibly go outside your front door to find inspiration for coloring on this very day! Spring-flowering trees are bursting into bloom across the land, filling the air with fragrance, filling our hearts with promise.

I’ve illustrated a flowering crabapple tree (Malus species), but this week I have been enchanted by all manner of spring trees, from weeping cherry to espalliered apple, almond and pear, and if you start getting into the redbuds, dogwoods, and magnolias... I can’t even go there yet. Too much awesomeness, every where you turn! Here’s just a snippet of what I’ve captured the last few weeks:

Masses of cherry trees lining the walkway at Missouri Botanical Garden

Gorgeous hot pink Columnar Apple tree at Missouri Botanical Garden called 'Maypole'

This baby pink weeping cherry tree is raining down sweet fragrant blooms near my folks’ house

A fabulous crab with dark cranberry-colored foliage and petals that look almost tie-dyed
This flowering crabapple tree is low to the ground and very wide, with the most welcoming branches for climbing. No children can resist to get up in it!

Looking up through the inviting crabapple tree, located in a little park area of my own town of Webster Groves

So, are you feeling the fizzy fun of flowering branches? Maybe you’re ready to see the set I designed that shows off the blooms and fruits and leaves all in one package? Well, here we go! Flowering Branches is ready to bloom!

Inspire Me Monday: Don't Be Intimidated, Just Add Color!

Howdy all!  Welcome to Inspire Me Monday and I'm your hostess this week, Allison Cope!

Now I am the type of card maker that may take hours and I mean HOURS to colour and cut and design and re-design a card to get it to the way I see it in my head.  Sometimes it can be intimidating looking at such detailed beautiful stamps and wonder how your going to make the SHINE!  But today, I just wanted to share a fun a QUICK colouring tutorial that would only take a few minutes!  Yup... colouring in only a few minutes you say!  That's right up a busy crafter's alley.

Today I'm working with water colour paper, Distress Inks and two gorgeous Power Poppy stamp sets, "Good Thinking: Love Notes" and "Simply Camellias".  So grab that cuppa joe, sit back and relax as I share some quick and easy inking with you today...  Enjoy!

Here's another quick glance at my four cards again...

Amazing how we started with 4 identical stamped cards & the same inks and how different each card turned out!  And that's the fun of experimenting with ink!

Thanks for stopping by today!  I hope this inspires you to create today.
