In Memory of Susan H. Smith, my mother

Hello friends,

My beloved Mom, Susan, passed away last Saturday. To have to write those words still seems surreal. She was so much more than a mother to me, she was my confidante and friend, my inspiration in every facet of life. She was the coolest person, one who totally played down her coolness. Which of course made her even cooler. She was brilliant, curious, and wise — she could have had a huge career as an artist, or a creative director, magazine editor, run a company or run for public office — but she wanted to be home with her family and her loving husband, guiding us, celebrating us, supporting us. She seemed to really enjoy it. Mom mastered living like nobody’s business.

We thank you so much for your beautiful cards and emails, for the outpouring of love and prayers as she was going through her fight with breast cancer that had come back and spread. My mom fought so, so hard. She was strong, and also very spiritual. Like I said, it still seems surreal, as we’d all been so hopeful she would have more time. But her health started deteriorating rather quickly, and the night she died, she was in her “healing sanctuary” at home, surrounded by family, her husband Steve, who has been Mom’s constant caretaker and devoted love, son Andy, Doug and me, and our four children. The kids sat on the bed around her, playing guitar and singing. We held her hand and filled her ears with loving, peaceful words. We loved her so much.

I wanted to share the obituary I wrote, as many of you have mentioned to me that you feel you’ve gotten to know “Mama Susan” through my posts the last few years. I really wish you could have met her. She would have given you a tour of the garden, and probably tried to send you home with a bouquet of whatever flowers you had admired.

Susan Heard Smith

Our darling, our muse. Giver of boundless love, life, encouragement, inspiration, art, and beauty. Susan Smith passed away on Feb. 6, at home in Kirkwood, from metastasized breast cancer. She was 71. Her effervescent personality was uplifting to be around, and she drew in friends, family, neighbors, and perfect strangers with her generosity and joyfulness, her gorgeous laugh, bubbly spirit, quick wit, and genuine warmth. Of course, if she were here now, Susan would play down these compliments, instead elaborating on how wonderful YOU are. She was unlike any other, our Susan, and she leaves behind countless people whose lives she impacted, and will miss her deeply.

Susan Heard Smith was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee in 1944 to Bonnie Spain and Donald Tibbs Heard. Her family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when she was a toddler. Growing up, she was creative and can-do, active in school social clubs like Tri-B and Damsels, putting on school dances, and making many lifelong friends. She often retold, with a laugh, how she got a report card noting that “Susan talks too much and does not respect authority.” It was adopted as a sort of unofficial motto, as she was quite passionate and confident about her views. While bebopping and sock-hopping (she was likened to the girl in the song, “Chantilly Lace and a pretty face, and a ponytail hanging down”), Susan graduated with honors from Will Rogers High School in 1962. As a fine art major at University of Tulsa, she was active in Delta Gamma sorority, president of the Panhellenic Council, and a member of the Mortar Board honor society among many other accolades. There she met Drew Spanogle, and the two were married after graduation in 1966. They moved to Kansas City, where Susan had been offered a job as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards, then a few years later to Pittsburg, Kansas, where Susan got a master’s degree in painting from Pittsburg State University. It was in a tiny studio/boutique behind their home that Susan began making and painting intricate dough ornaments for her business, “Flour Child”. She sold her personalized creations to department stores and at art bazaars, gathering a dedicated following.

All her life, she had a desire to “make pretty,” she simply loved to decorate, arrange, and surround herself with rare and interesting things. After moving to a mid-19th century home in Kirkwood in 1971, she feathered her nest with the most beautiful and fanciful hand-screened wallpapers, heirloom furniture nabbed at country auctions, antiques found during trips to Europe or little shops around town. Her own abstract expressionistic paintings hung alongside framed tempera artwork by her two children, Marcella and Andrew. She used her mother’s quilts as tablecloths at family gatherings, lacquered tables in high gloss paint, covered flocked Christmas trees with vintage glass ornaments and beads. She was without a drop of pretense or formality. Her style was as vibrant and memorable as she was, layered with pattern, color, art, and delightful details. It was no surprise that Susan’s home (and later, magnificent garden) was featured in house tours, newspaper articles, TV segments, and magazines both local and national.

In 1982, Susan married her Prince Charming and the love of her life, Steve Smith, an aerospace engineer and artist himself. They were a dream team. A couple who adored each other completely, complemented one another perfectly, always side by side, often kissing, hugging, and personifying a loving marriage. Together, they reimagined their interior and exterior surroundings, creating a wonderland of plants, cockatiels, wirehair fox terriers, and inspiring spaces, including Susan’s hand-lettered sentiment over the fireplace, “Fairy tales do come true.” Their garden, with its winding brick pathways, waterfalls, and Steve’s zenlike treehouse, became a showplace for countless varieties of irises, daffodils, tree peonies, magnolias, and exotic plants that overwintered in their greenhouse. Susan hand-painted garden tags for many of the plants in her elegant script, and tended to each little plant as if it were the most important one in the world.

Was there anything Susan couldn’t do? Be it ice skating or ballet; the most challenging New York Times crosswords or bridge with dear friends; debates on politics, economics, religion, philosophy; powering through tennis rallies or dancing in Christian Louboutin stilettos to Motown’s greatest hits, she grabbed life with total gusto. She stitched intricate needlepoint pillows. Sautéed gourmet meals with love. Wrapped packages for gift occasions with supreme attention to beauty and detail. You could not throw away one of her cards or hand-written notes! Every word was so carefully chosen and unusually rhymed, and would suit its recipient to a tee. Susan was a writer, stylist, and story producer, contributing to many articles for Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion magazine. A member of the Rowena Clarke Garden Club, she hosted beautiful luncheons and really got a kick out of sharing the love of plants and gardening know-how with this fine group of ladies. Susan and Steve enjoyed walking their dogs, Kip and Bonnie, all through their neighborhood, stopping to talk to friends and neighbors along the way.

Susan is survived by her husband, Steven P. Smith; her children, Marcella Spanogle Hawley (Doug Scronce), and Andrew Spanogle; step-children Melissa Cook and Amanda Kreider (Tim); grandchildren Lulu and Finn Hawley, Chloe Cook, Sylvia and Clara Scronce; brother Donald T. Heard Jr. (Joan); nieces Pam Sawatski (Bill), Bonnie Marquez, and Elizabeth Moran; and her mother-in-law, Jean Smith. The memory of Susan’s radiant smile and loving nature lives on in the hearts of all she touched. A celebration of her life will take place at home, when the garden is in full bloom later this year. Family will provide notice. Contributions in Susan’s name may be made to World Vision, or to the charity of your choice.

Five days of February clear stamp previews - starting.... NOW!

Hello there! I hope you’ve been following along lately to see that we have a whole WEEK of excitement to throw at you. (Don’t duck, it’s actually fun stuff that you won’t want to miss!) Whether it was our folk-artsy new digital stamp, Flowers, Always, which we introduced yesterday showcasing gorgeous cards by the Instant Gardeners, or an outstanding coloring tutorial by Kathy of the Daily Marker for Inspire Me Monday, we’ve started this week with some real flower power.

And now, I have a new clear stamp collection for you. This February release is called Grow Everyday, and features a range of springy botanicals (I know y’all love those), some all-occasion stamps that are easy to stamp-and-go without a big to-do about coloring and shading, and finally, something I’ve been wanting to bring to you since we first started Power Poppy, a set of positive affirmations. Five lively sets in all — you might recognize a few of the images from our digital collection, as I pluck out my faves and pop them into polymer when the time is right — and I hope you’ll see something that catapults you into creativity! Our Bloom Brigade has been working hard behind the scenes to develop beautiful and inspiring cards to share with you each day. On Sunday, February 21, we’ll have a bouncing blog hop with the entire team, and the week of February 22nd, our Grow Everyday collection will be in stock and ready to ship!

Let’s start peeking...

We’re going to start rolling with a set I’ve been dreaming about doing for years. Showcasing the flowers and branches and emerging buds of this flowering tree was so much fun, it took all my willpower not to create about six different sets, each featuring a different variety!! I actually did a watercolor featuring lots of Magnolias in 1996 (holy smokes, that was 20 years ago already), featured in the Klehm Nursery mail-order catalog, which I designed and illustrated:

But sometimes I have to reel myself in (not often, but sometimes), and here I’ve culled a few favorites. Want to see some of my inspiration? Many of these photographs were taken in my parents’ garden, which they nicknamed Magnolia Folly, owing to Mom’s love for Magnolias. Others were snapped at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where I seem to go so often in the spring, the gardeners there might think I’m an employee! (Maybe I should bite the bullet and apply to work there?)

Let’s start it off with a bang! Yellow magnolias make my life that much better, there, I said it. This one is Magnolia x ‘Butterflies’ in the front yard of my folks’ Magnolia Folly.

Photographed in the bulb garden last spring at Missouri Botanical Garden. Not sure of the cultivar. Let’s just refer to it as Magnolia ‘Awesomeness Maximus’.

Mom’s absolute favorite, the rare coral-color and double-flower make this one a total standout. It’s called Magnolia Coral Lake.

Again with the Coral Lake. Look at these radiant jewels! This is in the side garden at Magnolia Folly. :)

Magnolia stellata, or Star Magnolia. Check out the skinny petals of pink sweetness! This cultivar is one of the first to open at my parents’, and if it doesn’t get bitten by frost, produces gobs and gobs of starry blooms. Cultivar is M. ‘Leonard Messel’.

A branch of Magnolia stellata ‘Leonard Messel’ that Steve cut for me and I arranged in my dining room last spring, along with a myriad of Hellebores and tiny Daffodils displayed in test tube vases.

I cannot claim to know the name of this white Magnolia. Can anyone help me? I photographed its bubbly blooms a few years ago at Missouri Botanical Garden and forgot to write down the cultivar. Arrgh!

What a sultry center. The stamens look almost like a sea urchin... or teeny tiny french fries.

Lastly, here’s my lil red Yamaha parked next to Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’, at Magnolia Folly. This tree is over 2 stories tall and LOADED with flowers. Kind of a neighborhood showpiece!  I had ridden over to my folks’ house on a balmy spring day, and the only downside to riding is that you can’t bring home a bouquet...

I want to add that most of the Magnolias shown here, and MANY MANY MORE are available by mailorder from my favorite nursery of all time, Klehm’s Song Sparrow. Here is a link directly to the Magnolia offerings on their website. Go here for inspiration — and maybe pick out a tree or two!

Ok, that’s it for the show and tell. Now let’s get to the stamp set inspired by all this beauty! Presenting, Planning for Magnolias.

http://powerpoppy.com/products/planning-for-magnolias

I’ve clipped a branch straight off the tree, and whether you color it in pink, purple, yellow, white, coral, or any combination thereof, I think you’ll find this stamp a pretty addition to your stamping garden! There isn’t a ton of complicated shading on these plants, so this set works well when you don’t want to invest too much time, but still want a showy card or creation. Other images in this Planning for Magnolias have a more casual take... and one features a fun “planner” scene inspired by the kinds of tabletop set-ups we have all over our house... open books, calendars, journals with lots of cute stuff spilling out all over the place. Only this one has a Magnolia stellata along for the ride.

Oh, hey look!! The Bloom Brigade is breezing in to show us some of the many ideas you can try with this set of flowering Magnolias and friendly sentiments.

TAKE IT AWAY, BLOOMIES!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you’ll make a note to come on back tomorrow, for something a bit folksy, fun, and just a little bit “crewel.”

A Special Note:
It is with the heaviest heart that I must share with you this news. My beloved mother, Susan H. Smith, passed away on February 6th. You can read my special post about Mom’s life here. We cannot thank you enough for the prayers and good thoughts everyone has been sending.

With love and beauty to all of you... my sweet friends.

Inspire Me Monday: Shaped Card with Kathy Racoosin

Note from Marcella:
After you check out Kathy’s gorgeous post below, scroll down to see our newest digital download from the Instant Garden, and get links to our designers’ cards!

Hello Friends, How are you today? I am delighted to be back for another installment of Inspire Me Monday!  :) Have you heard about The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge? I am the creator of the challenge and we are in the middle of the fourth challenge. I have found that crafters like to have permission to color & to have the freedom to NOT create a card. Just to color for the sake of coloring.

Today I wanted to share a little bit of both. Let’s start out with this beautiful stamp set called, Orchids Rock. When I am coloring something every day I find myself reaching out of my comfort zone. I might use an unusual color combination or color a background that I might not normally go for. Case in point my coloring today. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this background but, I went for it. Let’s just say it looks artistic? I like the color combo but, I think next time I will square off the background. Lots of dots with the Copic markers and a white gel pen softened the harsh background but, I enjoyed doing it and that’s what’s important here.
The orchids were super easy to “blend” with the colors I chose. I hope this mini tutorial helps you out if you aren’t comfortable blending colors.

I have been having printer issues and was finally able to print this beautiful digital stamp set called, Climbing Clematis (I printed the digial flower on 80 lb neenah cardstock).

Our printer is pretty basic and I didn’t have any problems with the ink on the paper smearing. Whew! My big decision of the day was to color this beautiful print over the course of a few days & frame it or cut out the flower to make a shaped card for the post today.

That’s the beauty of digital prints .... they can be enlarged! I printed the Clematis again and cut out both flowers. I used a black marker along the white edges to give my card a polished look. The back of the card was scored and glued on to colored flower.
Thank you for letting me share with you today and I hope you take some time to do something you enjoy.

Hugs, Kathy

P.S. If you are interested in the coloring challenge it's never to late to join in at The Daily Marker

New to the Instant Garden for February: Flowers, Always

Hello, and happy day-after-Valentine’s Day! I’m still full from our special dinner of fish and vegetables cooked “en papillote” — steamed in a pouch made of parchment paper in the oven, it’s so easy and soooo delish! Though, maybe I’m actually full from the hot fudge sundaes Doug and I had afterwards. I put in too much fudge the first time, so we had to go back and add more vanilla ice cream, because, as Doug pointed out, “it should all come out even.” It was only after we both sat there will mild belly aches that we agreed that we could have just put down the bowls and let the extra hot fudge just “be.” But... who does that?

So! Today we have a ALL NEW digital stamp set for you! It’s a close relative to a clear set that we’ll be showing off later this week in our February Clear Release, so if you like this vibe, know that more is a-comin’!

Folks who’ve been following me for a while may have heard me talk about my Grandmother Bonnie and her hooked wool rugs. She was a thrifty — and dare I say, crafty — crafter who would buy up wool coats from the Goodwill, dye them a myriad of shades at home, then trim into the tiny strands she needed to make wool for hooking. I have some of her marvelous heirloom rugs (we used to have them on the actual floor, but after we had kids and I saw a few too many sippy cups and Play-Doh canisters near them, we decided to roll them up to bring back out when its a bit safer) and they are a delight to the senses with their beautiful floral designs and creative borders.

I will have to share photos of these rugs another time (SORRY!) because they are inaccessible for me to get to in our storage area. Arrrghhh. But, I did find some really cool, but much more primitive designs that were definitely inspiring to me. I just love the rustic, folk art style that many of these old hooked rugs have... the shapes are more simple because in many cases they had to be.

Here’s an example of rug that you will see was a big inspiration to me. I found this one on Pinterest, and I thought it was so fabulous, I created a design that echos it in a lot of ways! But I included several plants that I am fond of. Take a peek... doesn’t this make you want to take up a new hobby and start hooking rugs?! Who’s with me??

It was thinking about these rugs (as well as Jacobean crewel embroidery, which I will get into in a post later this week!) when I was working on our next clear stamp collection, and to be honest, I drew the image we are sharing today to be a part of that. But it was SOOOO WIDE, I was worried it wouldn’t even fit on the clear stamp canvas, much less on an acrylic block. So we are releasing it as a special digital offering, and I hope you love it! Introducing: Flowers, Always.

http://powerpoppy.com/products/flowers-always

BOOM! See how beautifully broad it is? I ended up cropping off two of the sides just to make my graphic for today. Hehehe! But if you want to see the whole thing, you can hop around to the Instant Gardners’ blogs, and you won’t miss a tiny detail of the image. Truly, this is the beauty of digital stamps. You can enlarge. You can shrink. You can crop in and focus on any aspect of the design.

Come take a look at how our talented designers interpreted Flowers, Always today! Then afterwards, come grab one for yourself! It’s really a lot of fun to color in, and because it’s a fantastical menagerie of flowers, fruits, and leaves, you can color it in HOWEVER YOU WANT! No need to stay true to what things might look like in “real life.” Keep it fun, and keep it interesting for yourself.

I really hope you will come back tomorrow... we are kicking off five days of new clear stamp sets with the Bloom Brigade. This is a release we’ve been looking very forward to sharing with you!

Have a great day, and hugs to all my peeps!

The count down in ON!

Hello all and happiest of Fridays to you! What have you been up to creatively this week? Have you been seeing signs of spring in your neck of the woods yet? If not, listen up! We have some fun to share that could put a little spring in your step and a little creative spark in your heart!

First up, I HAVE to tell you what's coming up in just a matter of DAYS! Not only will the Instant Gardeners be here on the 15th of this month to share a larger than life --brand spankin' new -- Power Poppy digital stamp to add to your collection, but the very next day, February 16th, the Bloom Brigade kicks off one heck of a week of clear stamp sneaks -- just for you!

Marcella spent much of January and February armed with her pencil, micron pen and sketchbook, drawing up new delights for you to use to stamp with recklesss abandon! And, look at what she had to put up with just to get them ready???

It never fails, when sketch mode comes into play, her fluffy tortie cat named Crema finds a comfy spot centerstage. She's even snuggled up on Marcella's arm as if to say, "no drawing for you!" The good news is, Marcy did finish up FIVE sets and the sneaks start next Tuesday, right after our digital stamp release on the 15th. What fun!

In the meantime, we have this going on still....

If you have't heard, last week we unveiled a brand new Power & Spark Challenge and this one encourages you to Switch it Up in the color department. Are your watercolors feeling a little neglected? What about those Distress Markers or colored pencils? This challenge is all about switching it up and reaching for a medium that you haven't used in a while! You can read up on all the official details HERE.   That's also where you'll want to link up your creation as well!

The entries are already starting to be linked up! Being that it's Friday, you know I love to share some of our Power Poppy Peep's creations! The one I am going to share today is striking to say the least in shades of vivid red with pops of white...

I had to read Melanie MacKenzie's  description of this card THREE times and I am still not completely sure how she created this! She said she embossed  her stamped image with white, covered the entire image with red ink and then used water to pull color from the flowers, coming back around to paint the leaves with a shade of green. The ink looks so even, it's hard to believe that the main panel started out white and that ink was sponged on! I might need to give this a try! Psst! By the way, Melanie used Power Poppy's Potted Primroses stamp set for this one!

Now it's time to turn things over to our creative team --- the Bloomies! A few of them took time this week to let those creative juices flow and I know they would love it if you hopped on over to their place to see what they put together!

Thanks for stopping by! We'll see you back here Monday for our new digital stamp set release with the Instant Gardeners and then.... Tuesday for day 1 of the Power Poppy Sneaky Peeks for our February Release! Woo Hoo! I can hardly wait!

Have a fabulous weekend!
~Julie

Inspire Me Monday: Brusho and Colored Pencils

Hello all!   Happy Monday to you all today!  I'm Allison and I'm your hostess today for Inspire Me Monday.

If you haven't already had the chance to check out the newest Power & Spark Challenge for February then you're missing out.  This month's challenge is all about picking up some of those not-so used coloring mediums that we all know we have hiding around.  You know, the ones that get pushed to back of the cupboard or the tin of pencils you keep meaning to use that your honey bought you for Christmas.  We all have 'em!  So now's your time to pull them out and give them a go.

For more information on the challenge details, visit HERE.

So in honor of this fun challenge, I too, thought I'd pull out some fun coloring mediums that I hadn't used in a while to use on today's card.  So I grabbed some Brusho Crystal Colours and my Prismacolor colored pencils since I typically would grab for my Copic Markers.

Grab a cup of something warm to sip and meet me at my scrappy desk... we're going to create a scene using some different stamps sets and having fun coloring it up with some cool mediums.

I hope you enjoyed my video today.  Let's see that card one more time...

I used the amazing "Cozy Cupfuls" and "Wreaths Plain & Fancy" stamps on my card today.  Who says these holiday stamp sets have to be used for just holiday cards?!

Thanks for joining me today! I hope I've inspired you to experiment with your coloring mediums - make sure you share your card creations with us on our challenge link up!

Happy coloring everyone!

~ Ally ~

And, Ally (of course) shared a drop dead gorgeous card showcasing how she put this challenge to the test! We all know she can do wonders with those Copic Markers BUT TODAY, she showed us she's just as skilled with watercolor pencils (Derwent Inktense).
