For the love of Tulips!

Welcome to Inspire Me Monday on Power Poppy! This is Rhea, and today, and I am sharing Tulips in Hobnail Pitcher.

This is a digital image which has been enlarged to 200%.  It is now framed in black with a black and white matting and proudly hanging on my wall of framed Power Poppy florals.

What I wanted to share with you today is the foliage.  If you look at the depth of the foliage, it was created using many different shades of greens. To make something look like it is in the distance, it needs to be a little darker with more of a gray tone to it. If you are using Copic Markers. this means you want to move more to the center of the Copic Color Wheel.

I like to start with the shadows first, or in this case, what is in the background. I started with YG61, 63 and 67 and colored the leaves that were behind the front leaves. Next, in the deepest shadow areas I added G94 and 99 as these have more gray tones to them. Now, I moved to the leaves that were in the front.  I used YG25, 17 with the highlight yellowish color being YG21. With these colors being more vibrant and lighter, it helped bring them forward.

Now for the Tulips!  There are several colors used here — ones you can’t imagine using together: V52, 63, 66, 69, 12, 15, 17, and Y00.... Say what!?!?! Yup, that's right. It’s all done in layers in the order listed with Y00 being the last added where I left white starting at the end and flicking into the violets and purples. These colors blend so well together and I actually had no idea what the plan was as I was just playing.  I figured I could always start over!

Now back to G99, I added this color to add drop shadows under the leaves and flowers and blended a little with G94.

For the pitcher....Mackenzie Childs Pottery is one of my loves, so I added the signature checkerboard pattern and just went for it. Although it isn’t perfect, I just don’t care because it is art! I used a multiline .08 in black to outline the black squares, and a Copic Spica marker (glitter marker) to add dots of texture to the cream squares. The final touches were to add a touch of color around the flowers and using V20 to ground the pitcher.

That’s how you take a flat image and add depth. :)

Birthday Sale • April Power & Spark • March Winner!

Hello everybody! It's the start of a new month and actually, the start of a new year for Power Poppy! Yes, TODAY marks the 2nd birthday of this fine, fun, FANTASTIC company. Thanks to all of YOU who have joined us in the journey to create a little art, share a lot of joy and.... Live in FULL Bloom!

To help us mark this momentous occasion, Marcella has a few gifts up her sleeve! Isn’t that just like her? It’s her company’s birthday and she wants to give YOU the gifts! ;-) So, stay tuned for the deets on that at the end of this post...

With the mark of a new month, we have a brand-spankin’-new Power & Spark Challenge and this one will have you stretching the bounds of your coloring creativity! I was a wee bit nervous to take this one on but I am so glad I did because it did indeed challenge me to think out of the box! So, without further ado...

Ms. Christine Okken is the hostess for this colorific quest to create something wonderful with — just THREE markers! Did I hear you gasp? You can’t fathom picking just three? Yes, I know, it sounds like a true (and FUN) challenge! Here’s how Christine explains it:

Have you heard about the 3 Marker Challenge? Google it to find tons of videos on YouTube that show artists creating with only 3 markers. The real rules say you have to choose 3 markers at random (close your eyes and just pick) and whatever you pull out, you colour with! There’s some pretty creative things out there and really gifted artists. For this month with Power Poppy, I’m going to go a little easier on you. I’m asking you to choose one of three options
1.  Pick three markers from the same colour family to create a monochromatic design
2.  Pick three markers from complementary colour families  - (this will be easier to blend, for example red, yellow, orange or blue, green, purple)
3.  Or, for the courageous or expert: Pick three random markers and colour away!
Remember only 3 markers! They can be alcohol-based or water-based, your choice. Use only 3 markers to colour!

And just to prove how masterfully she aced this challenge, check out her creation using Power Poppy’s Tulips in Hobnail Pitcher. It’s a brand new digital stamp set over at the Power Poppy Shop!

Did you notice that she shaded her aqua pitcher with... the green? Oh my! Now that, my friends, is showing us how it’s done! :-)

THE OFFICIAL RULES:
  • Use Power Poppy stamps if you have them, but if you don’t, this is a great way to WIN them
  • Link your creation below using our Linky (please use the exact URL from your post instead of a generic blog address.)
  • Please mention Power Poppy in YOUR blog or gallery post with a link back to THIS challenge
  • The winner will receive a free clear or digital stamp set of choice from the Power Poppy Shop
  • Enter as many cards as you’d like, as long as they fit the theme of the challenge!
  • Deadline to enter is April 30th @ 8:00pm EST.  At that point, we’ll draw the winner randomly and make the announcement right here on the first Friday of May!

So, let’s see you pick (blindfolded or not) three markers and marvel at your ability to take this challenge on! After you whip up your 3-Color Wonder, be sure to link up your creation below!

Being that it is the first Friday of April, it also means we get to share one lucky card-maker who won March’s Power & Spark Challenge thanks to Random.org! So, after all the entries were thrown into that computerized and magical winner picker, the number chosen was.....

That means the winner is.......

DONNA GOURLEY!!

And, just because we love to share, check out Donna’s take on the Peek-A-Book Sketch Challenge. I absolutely adore how she has just elements of the Springtime Love, Bloomin' Wonderful, and Simply Camellias stamp sets. She fussy cut them to adorn the cut outs in the sketch. So springy! So colorful! Such a clean & classy take on this sketch!

Congrats Donna! To claim your prize, all you need to do is email us at bloom@powerpoppy.com and let us know which stamp set you’d love to add to your collection.

Inspire Me Monday: Cut It Out!

Hello Friends!  It’s Christine popping in again today for an Inspire Me Monday Tutorial.  When I stamp Marcy’s images I am always so taken with her art that I want to showcase all of the stamped beauty just as is.  But today I want to show you that these stamps are equally beautiful when you use different methods of cutting the images, creating new effects.  I think it’s a great way to make your stamps even more versatile!

Cut It Out:  In Panels

A really simple way to give your images a new look is to stamp and colour the image as normal, and then cut the design into panels to separate it slightly, giving it almost the look of a screen.  This can be done vertically or horizontally.  Here I’ve stamped the gorgeous Planning for Magnolias and created a tri-panel design, really showing off that clean and simple style.  Simple details like piercing and enamel dots really give it a bit of an Asian feel.  The sentiment is actually from one of our Christmasy sets, Cozy Cupfuls.

Cut It Out:  Into Inchies!

Inchies are still really popular in cardmaking and this design is so easy to do!  I trimmed out 1 inch pieces of watercolour paper, then stamped the Azaleas stamp set in waterbased ink onto each square with three different ink colours, using a waterbrush to softly blend the colour a little.  Most of the sections are popped up, but I left a few flat to the card to create some varied dimensional interest.

Cut It Out:  Showcasing Embossing and Alcohol Inks

This technique only requires a few steps and supplies.  You’ll need some glossy card stock, some reinkers or alcohol markers, blending solution and a clear stamping block.

Begin by dribbling some reinker colour onto a clear block (or you can just scribble some marker on your block too).  Then spritz a little blending solution onto the block (I used a mini-mister) and immediately smoosh it onto the glossy card stock.   Repeat that step until you have the colour effect you’d like.

Because I was working with the Poppies set , I wanted to have lots of warm colours in reds and oranges, just like poppies are.

Then, after I had swiped my embossing buddy on the glossy cardstock, I took some VersaMark ink and stamped the poppies in gold, and then followed that with embossing in white.  From there I just cut larger squares (1 1/2 inches) and placed them on my card.  Isn’t that a neat effect?  A little more abstract, but still a great use of colour and texture.

A few pretty butterfly die cuts and some Krylon gold edging finish it off.

Cut It Out:  Split a Design in Two

On this pretty Simply Camellias design I stamped the image onto the deep pink card stock and then coloured the design with white prismacolor pencils adding some greens and pinks over top.  Then I cut the design apart and then cut it so that it would fit within this card base, leaving room for that fun embossed sentiment from Big Scripts.    A few polka-dotted die cut circled give the sentiment a little interest.

So don’t be afraid to Cut It Out!

http://powerpoppy.com/collections/digital-stamps/products/tulips-in-hobnail-pitcher

Here’s what Ms. Marcella had to say about this refreshed addition from her illustration archives:
“This lush bouquet of freshly gathered tulips captures laid-back country living, complete with a hobnail-trimmed milk pitcher. Two birthday sentiments round out this set that is just begging to be colored up this spring!”
We agree Ms. Marcy! These fresh-picked flouncy tulips are just waiting for you to add your touches of colorful charisma! With each new digital stamp set release, we look so forward to seeing your colorful spin on Marcella’s illustration. The beauty of using a digital stamp is the fact that we don’t have to wait all that long to see your creations “sprout!” You purchase, download, print and.... COLOR! I should point out that it is completely appropriate that Power Poppy is releasing a digital stamp set with birthday sentiments being that we are SOOOO close to Power Poppy’s SECOND BIRTHDAY! How can time fly that fast??? Well, you know what they say about time when you’re busy having fun -- it FLIES! Stay tuned for some Power Poppy fun in honor of our anniversary coming soon! ;-)

Inspire Me Monday: Look at your stamps in a new way

Hello Friends, How are you today? My name is Kathy Racoosin and I am super excited to be back today for another “Inspire Me Monday” feature.

Working with Power Poppy stamps is always a pleasure but, the hard part is deciding what to use because all of the stamps are so beautiful. Today I mixed two different stamp sets and I will be sharing a few masking tips and showing you that it’s ok to ignore some mistakes.

Before we get started I wanted to tell you why I am using the hands. I was hoping that my hands on the card would resemble a vase .... according to my niece not so much lol.

After I finished my card I decided to google images of "hand vases". (I tend to do things in reverse)  In retrospect I could have cut a hand out and popped it on top of the other hand and I might have a achieved the look I was going for?

Or... I could have drawn a simple vase in the stamped hands inspired by this vase.

Flipping the hand would have made a cool vase. If you take anything away today maybe it will be to look at your stamps with a different eye and to google for some images first :)

I used the Folk Heart and the Planning for Magnolias stamp sets.

I know some of you like to see the colors that are used so this photo is for you.

The hand was stamped with a Copic friendly ink and slightly off center. (I am using the mini Misti)

The images was stamped again on some masking paper and placed on the left hand. A “post it” was placed down to mask off the thumb. (note: see the part of the thumb peeking over the post it paper.)

This is what happens when you don’t pay attention when masking off an image.... a partial thumb and a lovely smudge BUT, that's ok you won't notice these things on the final card.

Using the acetate sheet that your stamps are on can guide you for placement when using the misti.

After stamping the magnolia branch I decided to add some more greenery.  I tore up some of the sticky side of a “post it” note paper to mask off any petals that might get in the way of stamping more greenery.

Stamping an extra image and cutting it out will hide most mistakes. The magnolia in the vase will be cut out and used to hide the lost half thumb.

I have shared this before and thought I would again in case you missed it. For a quick and easy background add some quick color with your alcohol marker. This technique is also a great way to disuse any smudges.

Use an old rag with a pile on the rag. Take some Copic blending solution to add texture and to get rid of the lines when you colored the background. Add just enough solution to damped the rag. Blot the damp rag on the background. Fluff up the pile on the rag and blot again. Repeat. Use the heat gun to dry your paper before you start coloring. If you are using light colors use a "0" to “erase” or remove any purple that may have bleed onto the image. Otherwise you can color on top of the color if you are using bolder colors.

That’s it for today and I hope that you picked up a tip or two. Thanks for your visit and have a wonderful week.
Kathy

Spring is in the Air!

Hello Power Poppy Peeps! It’s (happy dance) FRIDAY! I don’t need to tell you what that means, do I?? Okay, okay. I’ll give you the rundown. It means 1) Some shout outs to our creative customers of the week and 2) a little eye candy from our beloved Bloom Brigade, a.k.a. the Power Poppy Design Team, the finest in the land!

So, let’s get to some of those customer creations first! I mean to tell you, it is a PURE treat to surf around the blogosphere to see what kind of Power Poppy prettiness has sprouted in, get this, just SEVEN days! It’s like watching a garden grow, I tell you! These little bits of creativity are prolific and they sprout beautifully!

We love to share a bit of what we’ve witnessed blossom on your craft tables. This first creation is one of the entries for Stacy Morgan’s March Peek-A-Boo Power & Spark Sketch Challenge and it is, dare I say, BRILLIANT! This one is the brain child of Tricia Traxler and she used her Misti Stamping Tool to create these “ghost” images on the panel that she then placed over her main image. It looks like pink vellum, doesn’t it? Well, stamping friends, it is not! She stamped once and then using her Misti, stamped again for that perfect precision. I swear, I need one of those Misti thingies! Thanks for enabling Tricia, I tell ya! ;-)

We should mention Tricia used the Potted Primroses stamp set by Power Poppy and beautifully embellished this with sheer ribbon and a snippet of gold cording. Ahhh, it’s a beauty!

Next up is a kind of a brag on one of our Bloomies. Did you see Christine Okken’s post for the Cardmaker Magazine blog? Man, what a bit of vintage and vibrant flavor Christine delivered — with a European spin. You’ll have to CLICK HERE to see how Christine used the traditional blue-and-white folk art flair to make this quartet of cards for a friend. Psst! Just in case you wondered, she used Power Poppy’s new Folk Heart clear stamp set. You’ll want to pin this photo so that when you get your stamp set, you can CASE it (Copy and Steal Everything!). She won’t mind! ;-)

http://www.cardmakermagazine.com/blog/?p=13166

Gaw-gee-ous Ms. Christine! I love the clean and classy design and how you really added so much dimension, even with the monochromatic make up of these cards!

Now it’s time to take a gander at what the rest of the Power Poppy Bloom Brigade whipped up this week. I have a feeling they made “spring” their muse for their latest creations. It’s just a feeling! You'll have to make the rounds to see for yourself!

That’s it for us today! We hope you leave inspired and ready for a weekend of creativity! And, don’t forget to tune in on Monday for another edition of Inspire Me Monday, when we kick off the creative week with a BANG!

See you then!

Our March Instant Garden Introduction: Spring Meadow Bouquet

Hello all! Today let’s move beyond our “standard” Spring flowers. There are the cherished tulips and daffodils, yes, and we will always have them (in fact, more stamps will be coming out very soon featuring them!). But as spring is sprouting all around us, it is tempting to celebrate some of the other gifts from the ground — the unsung rockstars!

Imagine walking along a little winding creek near a dewy spring meadow. The sun is flickering across the scene as nodding fronds of what appear to be tiny hearts cascade over the creek. What might these nodding fronds be?? The old fashioned Bleeding Heart is what I have in mind! Dicentra spectabilis with its puffy little danging hearts.

And a bit further along in the meadow are what look to be giant snowdrops — but snowdrops have already finished blooming, the meadow is greening up. If that’s the case, what could these bouncing pops of white be? I’m looking at Leucojum aestivum, which is the beautifully whimsical plant called Summer Snowflake (there is also Spring Snowflake, Leucojum vernum, and others do actually nickname them snowdrops, though they are not the same plant as actual snowdrops, which are genus Galanthus).

What more do we come across? Well, flowering at the base of a creekside tree are masses of checkerboard-patterned flowers that could be straight out of a Mary Engelbreit card! Known as checkered lily or snake’s head fritillary, Fritillaria meleagris is a plant that you might fall in love with after seeing it just once. They are so unique looking. How do they get that checkered pattern? Nature!!! You astound.

Lastly on our meadow outing, we come across an old Lilac tree sprawling along a wooden fence. Year after year, it blooms with abandon, and scents the country air with its spicy perfume.

Imagine gathering up a few stems of each of these jewels, and you have our March Instant Garden digital stamp set offering, Spring Meadow Bouquet!

http://powerpoppy.com/products/spring-meadow-bouquet

This set is available now as a digital image (complete with sentiment!) that, after you order you receive it in an email as black-and-white jpg files. Save it to your computer, and then you just print it out from your home printer, and color away! If you ever have questions about working with our digital stamp sets, sit down with these great tutorials created by our Bloom Brigade design team:

Now, back to our new Spring Meadow Bouquet. What started with an imaginary gathering of flowers in my head, initially looked like a fuzzy blob. I roughed out how the flowers might be collected in my sketchbook:

I then redrew the concoction on my illustration paper (I use Canson Bristol Smooth). Now, we’ve talked in the past about how, once I get going on an image, sometimes I just can’t stop. This one ended up being quite rich with details and bits and bobs... and even a little meadow butterfly came along to rest on the foliage of the checkered lily. I like to get pretty detailed in my pencil sketches so I can really get a feel for how the drawing is going to look. For ink drawings that are meant to be colored in by others, I try to leave space for markers or colored pencils to go, and some airiness for any background coloring you may want to add.

After the bouquet was drawn in pencil, came the really fun part. Things start to get real! I grabbed a handful of Sakura Pigma Micron pens, ranging from .01 to .03 size nibs, and inked in the details, created the lines, tinkered with the weight of lines and the amount of tiny dots and details. By the time I finished up, it was late in the evening, and my photo was taken by the light of the lamp next to my little cozy spot on the sofa where I like to draw. (Not shown in photo, cat sitting next to me with one paw on my arm.)

And there you have the nearly finished piece! I scan my artwork into the computer and “clean it up” — which essentially means that I can fix any boo-boos like slips of my pen, or proximity of one plant to another. I fine-tuned this one in Photoshop, and now the Spring Meadow Bouquet is all filled up with unique and wonderful plants, plus a buzzing bumblebee too (at some point I decided I wanted more LIFE happening in this image, and along came that little dude...)

Now I’d love for you to see what our talented Instant Gardeners have come up with to show off this bustling bouquet. Bop around and be sure to say hello when you do!

Would you like to get your hands on this newest digital stamp set? Come and grab Spring Meadow Bouquet in the Power Poppy Shop right now!

I hope you have a wonderful day, and continue to enjoy the unfurling of spring’s abundance.
