Digital stamps in mixed media

Hi everyone! It's Dina - happy third Monday in May!! It's time for Inspire Me Monday.

Are you having fun with the digital release this month? I love these images, and the ability to resize, flip, repeat ... so much fun.  NOT everyone knows that printed digital images can be used in mixed media!! That's what I'd like to show you today. Here's my completed tag first - see the Tulip image peeking through?

I started by printing the tulip on heavy cardstock (110# or more is best) with my inkjet printer, and cutting out a tag shape. Working on a teflon craft sheet, I squeezed out a little dab of acrylic paint (I used Plaid Folk Art paint, #420 Linen). For this technique I like to use light colors, and this Linen is great for a vintaged look. I used the brayer to work the paint into a very thin, even layer...

...then rolled the paint onto the tag. The thin layer and the rolling action create some really cool texture effects. You can keep adding layers until you have the coverage you want. Acrylic paint dries quickly, and there's no effect on the printer ink.

I like to let the image shine through the paint color, and just use pencils to add shading and highlights. I used sepia and white Faber-Castell Polychromos oil-based pencils here (wax pencils will work too). If you're concerned about smearing, you can use a spray fixative such as Krylon Workable Fixatif to keep your pencil work in place.

Other layers of color are up to you! I stenciled a design using more acrylic paint...

...and added some random stamping with Memento Luxe ink. I held the stamp in my hand and curved it so only parts of the image would print.

I used the Memento Luxe ink to sponge around the edges too. This ink will dry over acrylic paint, and it's great for mixed media stamping and other effects.
