The Camellias have cometh

Today I’ve got something special to share. A digital stamp set featuring a floriferous display of buds and blooms and leaves and stems. One that cannot help but leap from the front of your cards and creations: the Camellias have cometh.

http://powerpoppy.com/products/camellias

If you live in a temperate part of the world, you might be a little more familiar with this showy plant. (Sweet Katie Sims of our Bloom Brigade has beloved bunches of them in her Georgia yard!) Here in St. Louis, I have come to admire the Camellias at the Linnean House at the Missouri Botanical Garden, on display from February through March. Their glossy, dark green leaves and ga-zillions of blooms create a magical display. Pinks in various states of saturation; shell and salmon and peach; creams and whites. Red and burgundy. Even candy-striped — and some that appear to have been spattered by Jackson Pollack’s paintbrush. Some are plump double blooms with so many petals, they create a pool of color beneath the bush when the flowers finish blooming. To see such lush flowers bursting forth in the middle of winter, well, it is heavenly indeed.

Camellias have long been the subject of poets and writers and painters the world over. They symbolize passion, longing, and enduring love. //>HOT STUFF!<\\ They also symbolize refinement and perfection. Here’s an ode to Camellias that I think is pretty wonderful:

In Nature’s poem flowers have each their word

The rose of love and beauty sings alone;

The violet’s soul exhales in tenderest tone;

The lily’s one pure simple note heard.

The cold Camellia only, stiff and white,

Rose without perfume, lily without grace,

When chilling winter shows his icy face,

Blooms for a world that vainly seeks delight.

Yet, in a theater, or ball-room light,

I gladly see Camellias shining bright

Above some stately woman’s raven hair,

Whose noble form fulfills the heart’s desire,

Like Grecian marbles warmed by Phidian fire.

The Camellia

Honore de Balzac

WHEW!!! I’d love to see a card that’s a tribute to that imagery... I may need to fan myself after reading it.

Whatever way you approach the Camellias, the sentiment that comes with this set (“Life is better with friends”) is one I bet you’ll use again and again. Suggested to me by Julie Koerber (who contributes many of our wonderful sentiments), it really sums up how I feel but don’t know that I express often enough. I know for sure: Life is better with your friendship, Jules!

Care to see some truly stunning creations made with this set? I encourage you to travel ’round the Internets with us now, and have your eyeballs blasted with beauty, compliments of the Bloom Brigade:

Stalking the Earth for a Winter Pick-Me-Up

I wonder if, when crafters await a new release of stamps to fuel their creative passions, it feels anything like a gardener stalking the arrival and bloom of her favorite plants.

I can speak to the latter, and good golly, it can feel excruciatingly long.

Last winter it was fa-reeeeeezing and snowy and subzero for way, way, way too many days, and when I saw the little tips of the snowdrops poke through the frozen ground in early January, I got so amped up, I photographed the leaf-strewn scene.

Check out those little nubs! All perky and fresh and purposeful. They look to be ready to keep up that momentum and burst forth from the ground in full splendor any day now, do they not? Well, I waited and I peeked and I waited and I tip-toed outside and peeked again and I waited and peeked. Waited. Peeked. Waited. Peeked. You get the idea.

A few MONTHS later, I was still looking at this.

That is not nice, Mother Nature!

I continued to wait and peek, and at last, by the second week of March, we had lift-off.

SWEET SNOWDROP REDEMPTION!

Man, that took forever, though, and these single snowdrops aren’t even the fancy double kind that need even longer to bloom! I just love the classic Galanthus nivalis, with their fat, droplet-like buds that open to simple nodding flowers. Over at my mother’s house, after she had to wait and peek for as many weeks as I did, we were rewarded with little scenes like this all over her garden beds, with the specialty bulbs she sources from around the world. I believe these are from Ireland:

Now remember, Susan H. Smith (my mama), likes things to be unique, the rarest of the rare. Her hybrid snowdrops (these are Galanthus ‘Ophelia’) are positively precious, are they not!? Worth the lengthy delay. So, let’s all just agree that it can be very hard to wait for things, be they new stamp sets or snowdrops. Which leads me to why you may be here today in the first place:

I have a new stamp set to share, it’s debuting as a digital image, AND — get this — it features the very plant that teased me along for so many weeks! Along with a few others...

powerpoppy.com/products/winter-pick-me-up

Winter Pick-Me-Up is ready to be plucked from the store right now! This set is actually two digital files, a bouquet and the coordinating sentiment, that, after purchase, is emailed to you directly. You then save the jpg image files from the email, print them out, and get to making a card the very same day. Nifty stuff right there!

I love the idea that the flowers in this bouquet could have been picked during a tip-toe through the winter garden ... snapping off a few pussy willow branches, bending down and rooting around in the leaves to get the glad-faced crocuses, and then, a few sweet snowdrops of course! Who wouldn’t be happy with a handful of that? A pick-me-up for sure.

Hope you’ll take some time to traipse through the blogs of the Bloom Brigade to see some of the snappy cards they’ve made with this set!

Inspire Me Monday: Stamped Dough Ornaments Tutorial

Hello and Happy Monday to all of you out there from me, Christine! Today I’m bringing you a delightful way to use your stamps for the Christmas Season in decorating or gift giving; creating stamped dough ornaments! They are easy to make and the finished ornaments are so pretty, perfect for your own tree, or for a sweet little gift.

First I’ll begin with the recipe. I really love how the dough turned out, it is very soft, easy to roll out, and to cut and stamp. It’s very white and dries almost like clay or porcelain, and best of all, you probably have all the ingredients already in your home.

Cornstarch Dough Ornaments

1/2 C Cornstarch
1 C Baking Soda
3/4 C Water

Instructions:  Add ingredients together into a saucepan, heat over medium heat stirring constantly.  Initially it will look like you’re warming up milk.  As the heat builds the cornstarch will begin to thicken.  As it gets thicker it will take on the texture of mashed potatoes, Once it’s reached this texture and there’s no runny liquid, remove from heat and cover with a wet cloth (so it doesn’t dry out).   You could put it into another bowl to cool, I just kept it into the saucepan sitting on the cool part of my stovetop.  You want it to cool enough that you can handle it.  Mine was ready in about 30 minutes.

In the mean time get all your cutting and stamping parts ready.

Begin by kneading the dough into a ball onto a surface dusted with cornstarch.  With a cornstarch dusted rolling pin, roll out to 1/4 inch thick.  It’s important to have a nice smooth even dough surface.  It all makes a difference in the quality of your finished ornament.

Here’s how mine rolled out dough looked.  Getting your dough thickness even throughout really helps improve your finished ornaments.  Then, use cookie cutters to cut out ornament shapes you would like to use.  I found that larger shapes that aren’t intricate work much better.

**Have your stamps ready in the background so that as your shapes are cut you can stamp them quickly before your dough begins to dry.  That way you’ll get the best stamped impression in your dough.

After you’ve cut out your shapes take your stamp (here I’ve used Merry Littles), and gently and evenly press your stamp into the dough.  You want to get a good impression that has some depth, but not push it all the way through.  When you press it into the dough it may change the shape of the ornament shape a little.  I found that the first one or two I did I didn’t get the pressure quite right, so I had to roll them back into the dough and redo them. Place on a cookie sheet when finished.  I had them on baking paper, but you really don’t need it.  The cornstarch really keeps them from sticking to the pan.

After I had practised a bit with stamping the ornaments I tried a different technique. What’s REALLY cool about stamping your ornaments is that you can also ink your stamps before you place them in the dough and the dough takes on the colour of the ink. Nice deep colours of ink really work well.  In total, out of one batch of dough I made 8 large ornaments and 10 small ones.

What’s fantastic about polymer stamps is that they’re easy to clean, all you need to do is run them under a little water and let them dry. You’ll have dough and cornstarch all over so a quick clean-up is nice.

Bake ornaments in a 185 degree oven for 60 minutes. Check at that time if they are dry on both sides. If not, add 15 minutes at a time until they are dry. At 60 minutes I turned my ornaments over so that the back would dry.  In total they took about 1 1/2 hours of baking time.

After the ornaments were completely cooled I used an emery board to sand off any rough edges and make them look a bit more polished.

Then comes the fun part!  Decorating!

I used a few different applications on the ornaments to give different effects.

Above are the larger ornaments. Sorry about the light...the sun was starting to go down and I wanted to take some pictures in the more natural light so you could get a feel for how it looked.

Here are the smaller ornaments with all their little ribbon hangers. They are so cute!

With a number of the ornaments, I decided to leave them very rustic and plain, so I painted them lightly with a coat of white acrylic glaze, like this design above. You could use Mod Podge to finish them off as well.

Next, I took a few close up pictures of different ornaments so you could see some of the colouring treatments I used.

On this ornament I used our lovely Heaven and Nature Sing stamp set. For colour I took out my watercolour crayons and a waterbrush and added soft washes of colour directly onto the ornament.  Because they are so porous they take on the colour easily, so use a light hand. Once the ornament was dry I spritzed some Mr. Huey’s Shine Color Mist overtop to give it that shimmer. It totally MAKES the ornament! This picture really doesn’t do it justice.  :)

On this Poinsettia stamped ornament, I inked the stamped with Memento Rhubarb Stalk before baking, then spritzed with Mr. Huey’s Spritz after.

This lovely one is also from Heaven and Nature Sing and the dough was stamped with Pear Tart ink then Mr. Huey’s Spritz after the oven.

This Church design from the beautiful O Holy Night set was also watercoloured and spritzed. I love the effect of the soft blues on the Church, trees and snow.

Here’s an even closer look at the effect of the shimmer and watercolouring.

Here’s a little ornament that I spritzed first with Mr. Huey’s Mist in Water Cooler and then over top in Mr Huey’s Shine.

And finally the pretty Church again from O Holy Night , this ornament is only stamped with Memento Rhubarb Stalk ink in the dough and then left without any spritz. I love the different effects you can get making each one unique. Can you imagine how a nice deep navy ink would look with this set? I’m going to try that with the next batch.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and I hope you try it! You’ll get so much more mileage out of your stamps and create some special ornaments along the way. Thanks for joining me today!

Fresh peek from my drawing board

Hello everybody!

I’m just stopping by to share that I’ve been drawing up a storm, and will soon have more flowery images to share with you. The only downside is that my hand my be stuck in the position of holding a pen, due to my obsessive stippling and crosshatching! (I use Pigma Micron pens by Sakura, the best best best.)

As those Thanksgiving leftovers are dwindling next weekend and holiday shopping is in full swing, we’ll ramp things up at Power Poppy with stamps to tickle all those digital-image fans. If you aren’t yet a digi fan, maybe now is a good time to find out what they’re all about!
Check out Julie Koerber’s digi tutorial, which explains a whole lot.

New release countdown starts Saturday, November 29.

Stay tuned and STAY WARM! :)

Monday

Inspire Me Monday: Glaze Masking

Hi, Dina again! It's Inspire Me Monday, and it’s my turn to share! Yay!

I wanted to share one of my favorite masking tips with you today... this is a favorite especially for small or detailed images, and Marcy has created some beautiful images for this holiday release that feature lots of small elements and beautiful details.

Traditional masking involves fussy cutting a shape out of thin paper to cover up areas we've stamped. Nobody wants to do that on a small image. Right?? For watercolorists, there are brushable masking fluids, but they can be fussy as well, and take a little practice to work with... and the patience to wait until they're *completely* dry before removing them... *ahem*

Do you have a Glaze Pen? I have a few. These are made by Sakura, and they're typically used to add a little shiny accent to a colored image. I had noticed that they're described as waterproof, and guess what?! They are. And they are my secret masking weapon.

Here's how I made today's card. I stamped in StazOn ink onto watercolor paper - this stamp is from the Bottlebrush Holiday set. When you watercolor, it can be tricky to lay down an even wash of color, or to avoid painting in tiny details. I started by using my Glaze pen to mask off some highlights.

Here's what that looks like - can you see where they're 'glazed'? Also - I love that the highlights are sketched in to remove the guesswork (thanks Miss Marcy!!). I added dots to the larger ornament where they're indicated too. Let the glaze dry completely before you add water, or it will run.

While the glaze was drying I moved over to the bottle brush tree and filled in the ornaments, then covered them with a coat of glaze. I did my watercoloring with Peerless watercolor sheets... I like to use them for detailed images because they're so easy to pick up in small amounts and with tiny brushes.

I watercolored over the dried glaze on the ornaments, and you can see how the pen resisted the paint. Here I'm adding another layer of glaze over the dried paint so that I can wash the area later. Sometimes we forget that masking can be done in stages and layers.

Back over to the tree, where I added some random dots for little snow spots. A tip for getting a good, even flow from your pen - move slowly.

I stamped and shaded the banner and glazed it too.

Now I can add some color to the tree, and those glazed dots will stand out like painted snowy tips.

Except for the tree, the full image is actually covered with glaze at this point, so spritzing water over it will not affect my protected coloring.

Here I'm adding color into my misted background, and the glaze is resisting the color and water. This makes it so easy to do this fun wash! This does work for sponged backgrounds too, and with alcohol inks, in case you prefer another medium.

Here's an angled shot so you can see the water beaded up on the glazed ornaments. You can just dab that water off for quicker drying time.

Here's my finished card, with a few added splatters. My background panel was made with strips of gel printed paper.

Close up...

And at an angle so you can see the shine - I love that it's functional and pretty at the same time!

Thanks for letting me share!

Thanks for stopping by!
