Hues to Use is Back!

Hello Colorific Peeps! With all the festivities going on with Power Poppy's Happiest Holiday Release, we've put Hues to Use on the back burner for a week. Well, this week, we decided to let it simmer again and hopefully boil over as those creative juices flow!

If you picked up on the cooking theme with my lead-in to this challenge, then it probably comes as no surprise that FOOD is at the center of this visually delectable delight for this week's Hues to Use! This little photo is the product of not Marcella's hands but two of her kiddos! Check out Sylvia's Apple Crumble Cake and Lulu's Ginger-Apple-Walnut Crumble Pie! As Marcy stated when she added these to her IG, a butter coma was in the forecast! Maybe they should share the recipes? What do you think?

Well today we have an extra special treat to share with all of you! We have a fabulous guest designer in the house who created not one, but two different creations using this trio of colors! Say "Hello" to this fine lady, will you?

"Hello everyone! I'm Berina, I live in Overland Park, Kansas with my husband and our 2 beautiful daughters. I was born and brought up in a small town in the Southern most part of India. I started stamping about 4 years back and I love making cards. I bought my first Copic marker a little more than a year ago now and from then on, I've become addicted to coloring. My almost 4 year old daughter follows me with her crayons and pencils - she calls them her Copic markers - lol!
I love to color floral images. I first saw Power Poppy images on KathyRacoosin's blog. It was the Happy Crabapple stamp set. I was in awe, seeing all the beautiful details!! I have never seen such a detailed illustration of flowers! From then on, I'm following Power Poppy and Marcella wherever possible - lol! I just had my first set of cards published in Just Cards! magazine and one of them is with a Power Poppy digital stamp set. When Julie asked me if I'd be willing to guest design for Power Poppy - Hues To Use, I was literally jumping up and down! It is a dream come true!!
I've made 2 cards for today. Well, I made 1 card initially. It didn't seem good enough - how can I screw up this moment?!! So I made one more. Now, the first one seemed better. So I decided to share them both and let you decide.

For my first card, I used the Olive and Oak digital stamp from Power Poppy. I took a printout of the image in a light grey color and colored with copics. I used E59, E57, E53 and E31 for the acorns and the stem. For the Oak leaves, I used G99, YG67, YG63, YG61 and YG03. For the Olive leaves, I decided to go with E53, E31 and YR31. I used the Colorless Blender to highlight the veins. I stamped the 'Happy Wishes' from the Simply Camellias stamp set for the sentiment. I trimmed this panel to 4" x 5.25". For the matting layer, I colored the edges of a piece of white cardstock with E57, so that the color matches exactly with the scheme of my card. This is a clean and simple card as I wanted the focus to be on the colored image.

For my second card, I decided to use the Simply Camellias stamp set. I stamped the image on watercolor card stock and water colored it with Distress Inks. I used Vintage Photo for the stem, Peeled Paint and Crushed Olives for the leaves and Antique Linen and Scattered Straw (just a teeny tiny bit for shadows) for the flowers. I die cut it with a stitched rectangle and matted with a card stock inked with Vintage Photo. For the background, I took a piece of white cardstock and inked it with Crushed Olives first and then muted it down with Peeled Paint. Then I stamped the single Camellia flower from the stamp set, repeatedly with Peeled Paint. I stamped the sentiment Hello Friend from the same stamp set and die cut it with a oval die. I colored the edges with a brown marker to give the illusion of matting and mounted it with foam tape. I added a brown ribbon and a bow for some added interest.

Thank you so much for having me today!

Well Berina, it was our honor to have you! And, to see that you created not one, but TWO gorgeous cards is even more of a treat! We should point out if you want to see more of Berina's work, all you need to do is travel over to her blog Moxie Craftie.

Want to follow in Berina's footsteps and be inspired by these delish looking fall delights like a baked apple crumble? All you need to do is take our color cues and when you're done with your creation, make sure to link it up using the linky below! Who knows, your card might just turn our heads and have YOU guest designing for an upcoming edition of Hues to Use!

So get those fingers inky and be sure to play along! Thanks for stopping by!

~Julie

Both cards are gorgeous, but I think I'm just a bit partial to the second one! I love how you created the background for you image by repeatedly stamping the camellias stamp in peeled paint!

Hey great job Berina! I love how you used the colorless blender for the leaf veins on the oak leaves. I need to remember to do that. Also, I love how you made your background for the camellias card! I need start reaching for my inks vs buying more colored card stock (and then letting the scraps pile up lol)

First of all, a BIG congratulations to Berina for being this week's Guest Designer! It's a joy to read your bio about you and your family...and how you found Marcy and Power Poppy, and I've seen your beautiful work on Instagram. I love both cards, and what beautiful inspiration using these newest hues. Truly gorgeous and wonderful coloring, sweet Berina! Thank you for inspiring us with your work. It is a joy to see you featured! :) And, Julie, yes, we'd love for the girls to share these recipes. They look delicious! Hugs, all!
