Creative Confetti: Just Color!

Hello peeps! If you've been paying attention to the buzz in blog land, you know that fabulous woman Kathy Racoosin is at it again with another 30 Day Coloring Challenge over at The Daily Marker! So, in the spirit of her mission to get us all in touch with our inner coloring mojo, I decided to focus this week's Creative Confetti on doing just that!

HOW TO PLAY: Simply pick up a coloring medium -- any one will do -- and get coloring! Just that simple folks! Then, after you're done coloring, link up your creation here as well on the linky below for a chance to win some Power Poppy goodness too!

On to my creation! As you can see below, I started by printing off the digital stamp Created to Create! It's been a while since I chose this one and I knew I would have fun digging into an image with some spring flowers! It was also a great image to get lost in and let my mind wander in the coloring process.

I started with the green foliage using the Copics below....

Then, I added these markers for the yellow petals...

These shades of orange for the centers of each flower...

A few shades of red for the paintbrush handle...

Some brown and grey shades for the brush and metal portion...

After I colored up the paint palette, using two shades of each color, I added these two markers to add depth behind my image and bring in a wee bit of shading...

And then these light brown shades to give a little depth to the paper pad as if the sketchbook was a little antiqued and worn...

And then, I added a sentiment from the Pure Prairie stamp set. The perfect sentiment I think!

And that my friends is it! Just a little coloring session to share and hopefully inspire you to get into your own stamping spaces to enjoy your favorite coloring medium as well!

Creative Confetti: Color It Up!

Hello, happy stampers! Hope your week is off to a great start! Today, as we throw up the Creative Confetti, we pay homage to a magical little challenge in card making and coloring land! If you popped on over to the blog yesterday, you saw the amazing Kathy Racoosin share a little coloring experiment with all of us! It was a part of her 30 Day Coloring Challenge! You can check out her post HERE and all the details about the challenge HERE! Simply stated, Kathy is challenging us to make time to color, every day, even if you only have ten minutes!

So... because we have 9 days left of the challenge, we thought we'd take it one step further and not only encourage you to color but try one image a few different ways OR just try a coloring medium you haven't dabbled in for a while! Here, my friends is your official challenge!

HOW TO PLAY: The challenge is just as simple as it is stated! Just pick up a coloring medium that you haven't used for a while and play! No need to create a card, simply color and join along in The Daily Marker's 30 Day Coloring Challenge!

On to my creations!

For my creations today, I decided that I wanted to take one image -- I chose the little peony from Power Poppy's Soothing Sympathy stamp set -- and color it up in four different ways. I picked watercolor pencils (both on watercolor paper and card stock), chalk and Copic Markers. I also picked up some markers here but decided that the look was too similar to the watercolor pencils, so I left that little photo out.

So, after stamping my image multiple times in a variety of inks, I put on some tunes and went to town coloring!

First came watercolor pencils scribbled directly onto the watercolor paper. The ink used was Memento Toffee Crunch. I blended with a Dover Blender Pen as I went along.

Next came pastel chalks. This one was tricky. The chalks were so soft that I really had to get in there and blend and keep adding more and more chalk layers. It created a soft look but didn't really have a ton of dimension to it. It was a more "loose" feel.

Next, I went back to my watercolor pencils and added the color on regular card stock. The depth of color really struck me! I then blended again with my Dove Blender Pen.

And last, but certainly not least is my all time favorite medium -- Copic markers! I just find such joy in the easy blending of this medium and how rich in color it can be!

So here, below, is a peek at all four next to each other with a little background color added to each image. I thought once I popped that background a bit, it did make all of the coloring (even the mediums I wasn't completely happy with) look a whole lot better.

So, my friends, what medium will you reach for to spend a little time with The Daily Marker's 30 Day Challenge? One medium I have that I didn't use was pearlescent paint. I have some, so who knows, maybe I'll stamp this little flower up once more and give it a whirl!

Inspire Me Monday: Experimenting with Color!

Hello Friends, My name is Kathy Racoosin from The Daily Marker. I am in the middle of a 30-day coloring challenge and for me it's Day 18! If you are curious what the 30 Day coloring challenge is or if you have been watching from the sidelines, now is a good time to jump in and get your feet wet. For me the challenge is time to experiment with my coloring and not only try different mediums but, to go out of my comfort zone. One of the great things about the challenge is to bring back the love of coloring and not have that pressure to finish a card. Many times during the course of the challenge, I might color a partial image. My mantra is to find some you time for 10 minutes a day.

With that said, I really went out of my comfort zone for today's post and thought I would share my process with your today.

These are the different phases of this painting! I completed the first one all the way on the left and then my twin sissy came over. I was going to coach her how to make bone broth and my spicy chicken vegetable soup. (I will have a photo recipe at the end)

So while I was instructing her, I started on the second clip in the photo. When I was "finished," she would have this weird expression lol so I would keep on adding color.

I began by stamping this beautiful illustration from Marcella in the Amaryllis Bliss Stamp Set.

After a little masking and another little bit of stamping, I was ready for paint.

Usually, I like to paint a blue background but I wanted to try something different. So, grey was my choice. I used a super thin multi-liner to darken the nooks and crannies. I also outlined the stamen so I wouldn't lose them once I started painting since the ink color is fairly light.

I thought it would be fun to add some shading before I started adding the color.

Leaving white areas was an effort and purposeful on my part.

This is where the problems began. I should have used different colors on the flowers. Since I got the nose snub from my sissy, I kept on adding color. LOL!

I added an overlay of blue and purple and softened some of the white areas. Should I have stopped sooner?

Something was still missing for me. Once the added black on top of the grey in the background, the colors popped more and I liked it better. My sister didn't like the background and my husband said maybe it's to much color haha!

The moral of the story is, I did enjoy the process until I added the 4th layer of color. By that time, I was in deep and invested a lot of time but, all in all, it was a great learning experience.

My favorite bloom is the one on the far right with the turquoise and the brown showing through. I would love to hear your honest opinion. Should I have stopped after the second layer? Would you ever consider adding grey or black to the background?

Inspire Me Monday: Christmas Corgis with Kathy, Julie, and Marcy

Happy Monday, all! It’s Marcella here, presenting a switcharoo on how we traditionally bring you Inspire Me Monday. Today we are featuring one stamp and three ladies’ crafty takes on coloring it up. In honor of the Daily Marker’s 30 Day Coloring Challenge, we aren’t even making cards, we’re just coloring for the pure pleasure of it.

Kathy Racoosin, the Daily Marker

Kathy took our little leaping Corgi and put him on his tiptoes! What a clever idea. And then made a sign on which to place the sentiment, accented with a holly sprig. I wouldn’t have thought to do this in a million years. I guess that’s why we call this column, “Inspire Me Monday”. I love the playful arrangement of Kathy’s elements in the space, the doggie on his tiptoes draws your eye up to the sentiment, which even looks like it has marquee lights with her tiny white dots!

Another thing I'm loving about Kathy’s Corgi is the way she colored the fur. There is some seriously interesting texture happening - all created with light and shadow and fine strokes of her Copics. It’s like a reindeer and a Corgi went to the beauty shop and came out with this elegant coiffure.

Julie Koerber, the Bloom Brigade

Julie decided to color up her Christmas Corgi in classic “Pembroke Welsh Corgi” coloring, caramel and white. She grabbed a handful of Copies and used tiny quick strokes to bring out his fur and add wonderful shading.

As to the background, Jules didn’t know how she might use the little Corg in an upcoming card just yet, whether he would be prancing or splooting (when the dog is completely splayed out with paws fully extended out back, we call it a SPLOOT!), so she created a lovely versatile background that can go either way! So fun, simple, and quick... finished off with rosy cheeks for extra cuteness factor.

Marcella Hawley, Power Poppy

For our last example of Christmas Corgis, I got out my Prismacolor Premier colored pencils. The giant mix of 150 colors was a bit of a splurge on Amazon, but I cannot tell you how worth it it is to have such a range of colors at your fingertips. I plucked out the following shades of brown, beige, and a bit of pink for the paws and insides of Tibbs’ ears.

I don’t know that I even used all of the browns... but I had them out in case I wanted to. I was sure to start with the lightest colors and build shading with each coat. I also followed the shading in the stamp to know where to put my shadows. Then I glanced over at Tibbs to get a good look at his unique coloring. Our Corgi Tibbs is a mix of Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and he has a blue merle coat on his back, which gives him some grey and black spotting.

For the background, I used two colored pencils: Pale Sage and Light Green. I thought they looked pretty against the caramels, greys, and ivory tones of Tibbs’ fur.

Lastly, I added “snow” using a white paint pen. It was being particularly gloppy today, but I decided that I like the variations in the dots! Happy accident strikes again.

It all melted within a few days, but gotta say that the snow helped me get into the holiday spirit. And I know that my Christmas Corgi had an absolute blast playing in it.

Inspire Me Monday New Tip and Big Announcement and SALE

Hello! How are you all today? My name is Kathy Racoosin from The Daily Marker. If you are following along with "The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge" it's Day 18.

Oh my, how times flies.

For the "Inspire Me" post today I am doing some watercoloring for the 30 day challenge. During my coloring process I discovered a fun new tip that I can't wait to share with you. I guess you could call it a happy accident.

I inked up this absolutely beautiful flower called, "Poppy XL" set and I love every one of these XL flowers in this series. Here is the Dahlia XL (plus the new coordinating die) , Tiger Lily XL and the Poppy die cut. LOVE what you can do with these XL flowers & I will tell you it makes watercoloring easier with more petal space.

The way I choose the colors for a flower is by mood or feeling and what color am I in mood to use. I haven't used purples in awhile so that's what I settled on.

I just searched the web for Poppy's and discovered there is a range of colors and a purple poppy too.

We are away for Father's Day weekend so my supplies were limited. My NEW TIP IS ... to use an ink that is NOT for watercoloring. You can see what happens in the video that I took with my phone.

If you used an ink that is not intended for water it blurs and can smudge. You can make that blur work to your favor. The areas with more detail in the illustration become a darker grey when you add water. Those illustration details lines blur beautifully and add a shadow naturally.

When my painting was completely dry I added a few accents lines to the nooks and crannies. I also added circles white a white gel pne to define the center. The area in the middle with a fine tip sharpie.

Adding white accent dots around the center of the flower adds that little extra. When the white dots are dry I like to add a tiny black dot on top. Dots on dots lol :)

When I was watercoloring with the distress ink I didn't worry about the turnout and chose to focus on the pleasure of the painting. It was deliberate to leave some white areas on the petals. . Remember to enjoy the process and hopefully you will give me tip a try and see if you like the results.
