Sparkle in the Shade

Hello folks! Have we got some fun for you on this Tuesday! I love challenges that are so easy, you really don't even need to think them through -- you just create! Well, today's bit of Creative Confetti that we are throwing up is just as sweet and simple as it comes! Are you ready?

HOW TO PLAY: This one couldn't get much simpler! Create with just one color in many different "shades" - then, add a little sparkle to the final creation!

On to my creation!

If you visited my blog for World Card Making Day... you've already seen a little snippet of this creation. Click HERE if you want to know where this design started! If you click on over, you'll see how I created that raised and watercolored background. It was also many of YOU that helped me to finalize the design, so thank you!

The fussy cut magnolia image is from the Planning for Magnolias stamp set. This image is one of my all time favorites. Not too long ago, I used it HERE and this time, I loved coloring up this one in shades of blue! After stamping in Memento Tuxedo Black and fussy cutting, I reached for a mix of B and BG Copic Markers. I used B000 and BG11 for the petals, BV20 and BV23 for the center and branches and then BG70 and BG72 for the leaves.

I should mention the sentiment I used is from Power Poppy's Tweet Tidings stamp set. Yes, it's part of a holiday set but you can use these words all year long in my book!

And here's a closeup of the sparkle! After I was all done coloring, I added a little shimmer thanks to a Wink of Stella Clear Glitter pen! See?

And that, my friends, is it!

HOW TO PLAY:
  • Create using a monochromatic color scheme... then add sparkle!
  • Use Power Poppy stamps if you have them, if not, you might win some if you're randomly chosen. Each month, we'll round up all those that play in any of the month’s Creative Confetti challenges, and draw a name from the entries to win a $25 GIFT CODE for the Power Poppy Shop!
  • To enter, link up your creation below, sharing the direct link to your card from your blog, Instagram, or card gallery.
  • Our link will be open all month for you to play along with us! Try one Creative Confetti Challenge or partake in them all for extra chances to win!

So, now it's your turn! When you're done, make sure to link up your creation below so that we can all see! Keep in mind, one lucky stamper will win a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! The more you play along with us during the month, the better odds you have of being our lucky winner!

Thanks everyone for stopping by and checking out what we've got in store this week! We can't wait to see your "Sparkle in the Shade" creation!

Until next time!

Planning for Magnolias

Hey everyone Jessie here today sharing another watercolor card for you all today! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it! I am thrilled that I will now be able to share an Inspire me Monday post with you all every month!

I stamped out the branch of flowers from the Planning For Magnolias stamp set using Versafine Onyx Black ink on Fluid watercolor paper. I painted the image with my Schmincke and Daniel Smith watercolors (there is a process video for you here in this post.) After everything was nice and dry I stamped the sentiment from the Prairie Cheer Set!

I have recently created a facebook group, that the wonderful Marcella told me to share with you all! The group is called Cards and Colour! In the group I am doing one or two live colouring events a month using different colouring mediums (There is even one coming up for Power Poppy, shhhh!!) It's also a place where we chat about different things with colouring and stamping and share everyone's wonderful makes, I would love you to come join us!

Now that is enough of my babbling and on to sharing the video!

Thanks for stopping by,
Hugz,
Jessie

Coloring On Anything Other Than White!

Hello Power Poppy friends!  It’s Christine here bringing you a little inspiration today.  Do you ever feel like you get stuck in a rut when you’re creating?  Stamp the same way, colour the same way....today I have some ideas that might get your "inspiration thinker" moving in a different direction.

I normally pick an image, stamp it onto XPress It Blending card stock and then colour with Copics.  But, what if you chose something else to stamp and colour on...something non-white?  Here are my 4 card experiments, colouring on paper other than white!

1.   Patterned Paper - Embossing and Watercoloring

I’ve been on an Inktense Pencils and watercolouring kick lately, which has been really fun.  I like these pencils a great deal because they give such vibrant colour, wash in so beautifully, still retain their vibrance, and they require very little water to blend.  This means you can use other types of paper rather than just watercolouring card stock.

I decided to stamp the rose from Power Poppy’s My English Rose stamp set onto apatterned paper that was full of text.  I embossed the roses in white over the text, and then gave them some colour with the Inktense Pencils.  With stamping and colouring over text, you want a colouring medium that will give you nice deep colour coverage, so that the text is still visable, but you really see more of the colour than the text.

This is what it looked like as I was colouring/watercolouring.  On the top rose you can see I’ve washed in that first layer of red (I’ll add more colours as I go), but on the bottom you can see how very little pencil lines you need on the paper.  I barely have to add any water, just a damp brush and it blends really well, and because you don’t have to add a lot of water it doesn’t pill the paper either.  Inktense Pencils are actually ink, so if you wash in your colour and then let it dry, it’s permanent.  That means you can add other colours over top or other treatments and your colours won’t get muddy.  I’m finding that to be a great feature.

Here’s a closeup of the finished design.  You can see I added some other deeper red and blues into the roses and leaves.   I love how the resist of the embossing gives it a subtle outline, and the text still peeks through the colouring too.

This next design is similar in that it also uses patterned paper, but this time I found a soft neutral vining-pattern in my paper stash. It pairs really well with the flowers from our Poppies Set.

This is the colouring after the first coat of orange is washed in, I’ve added some deeper reds that I’ll wash in and I’m about to work on the first wash of the greens on the leaves.  There’s quite a bit of texture in this patterned paper, almost like a watercolour paper without the thickness.

The subtle pattern in the paper changes the feeling of the design in a fun way.

I hope this will have you looking at your patterned paper in a new way as a potential colouring paper. Just look for more neutral designs with subtle patterns and experiment.  Copics would also work really well as a colouring medium with patterned paper, if you’d like to try them out.  I would suggest having some scrap paper underneath your patterned paper as Copics may bleed through the lighter weight.

2.  Colouring on Coloured Cardstock

Colouring doesn’t just have to be on white card stock...why not pick a lighter shade of card stock and stamp and colour on it?  I created this lovely monochromatic bluey-green design, stamping the gorgeous Planning for Magnolias branch onto the Pool Party card stock.    Then I added in some soft matching colouring just a tone deeper than the paper (BG11, BG13, G00).  Your base colour is essentially done for you by using the card stock as the lightest shade.  All it takes to finish this one is a layer that’s been embossed to provide a little texture and subtle contrast, seam binding and some sequins in the same shade.  I think it has a lovely peaceful feel.

Kraft paper is also another great colour to colour on (wow that’s a funny mouthful!).  I often colour it  with prismacolour pencils, but Copics work great on Kraft card stock too.  It gives a richer tone...and automatically warms it up.  Here I’ve printed one of my favourite Power Poppy digital images,  Sunflower Power onto Kraft and then added Copics.  I find with colouring on Kraft you have to add deeper shades than you would normally to get the colour you’d like, but it all really adds to the rustic charm.

Some buttons, twine and a sentiment from Dynamic Duos - Peonies and Tulips add to the earthy appeal, and below you can see the Copics I used for the sunflower.

So there you have a little inspiration for your Monday, I hope it encourages you to go and dig through your papers and test them out!  Thanks for joining me today!

Tuesday

Five days of February clear stamp previews - starting.... NOW!

Hello there! I hope you’ve been following along lately to see that we have a whole WEEK of excitement to throw at you. (Don’t duck, it’s actually fun stuff that you won’t want to miss!) Whether it was our folk-artsy new digital stamp, Flowers, Always, which we introduced yesterday showcasing gorgeous cards by the Instant Gardeners, or an outstanding coloring tutorial by Kathy of the Daily Marker for Inspire Me Monday, we’ve started this week with some real flower power.

And now, I have a new clear stamp collection for you. This February release is called Grow Everyday, and features a range of springy botanicals (I know y’all love those), some all-occasion stamps that are easy to stamp-and-go without a big to-do about coloring and shading, and finally, something I’ve been wanting to bring to you since we first started Power Poppy, a set of positive affirmations. Five lively sets in all — you might recognize a few of the images from our digital collection, as I pluck out my faves and pop them into polymer when the time is right — and I hope you’ll see something that catapults you into creativity! Our Bloom Brigade has been working hard behind the scenes to develop beautiful and inspiring cards to share with you each day. On Sunday, February 21, we’ll have a bouncing blog hop with the entire team, and the week of February 22nd, our Grow Everyday collection will be in stock and ready to ship!

Let’s start peeking...

We’re going to start rolling with a set I’ve been dreaming about doing for years. Showcasing the flowers and branches and emerging buds of this flowering tree was so much fun, it took all my willpower not to create about six different sets, each featuring a different variety!! I actually did a watercolor featuring lots of Magnolias in 1996 (holy smokes, that was 20 years ago already), featured in the Klehm Nursery mail-order catalog, which I designed and illustrated:

But sometimes I have to reel myself in (not often, but sometimes), and here I’ve culled a few favorites. Want to see some of my inspiration? Many of these photographs were taken in my parents’ garden, which they nicknamed Magnolia Folly, owing to Mom’s love for Magnolias. Others were snapped at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where I seem to go so often in the spring, the gardeners there might think I’m an employee! (Maybe I should bite the bullet and apply to work there?)

Let’s start it off with a bang! Yellow magnolias make my life that much better, there, I said it. This one is Magnolia x ‘Butterflies’ in the front yard of my folks’ Magnolia Folly.

Photographed in the bulb garden last spring at Missouri Botanical Garden. Not sure of the cultivar. Let’s just refer to it as Magnolia ‘Awesomeness Maximus’.

Mom’s absolute favorite, the rare coral-color and double-flower make this one a total standout. It’s called Magnolia Coral Lake.

Again with the Coral Lake. Look at these radiant jewels! This is in the side garden at Magnolia Folly. :)

Magnolia stellata, or Star Magnolia. Check out the skinny petals of pink sweetness! This cultivar is one of the first to open at my parents’, and if it doesn’t get bitten by frost, produces gobs and gobs of starry blooms. Cultivar is M. ‘Leonard Messel’.

A branch of Magnolia stellata ‘Leonard Messel’ that Steve cut for me and I arranged in my dining room last spring, along with a myriad of Hellebores and tiny Daffodils displayed in test tube vases.

I cannot claim to know the name of this white Magnolia. Can anyone help me? I photographed its bubbly blooms a few years ago at Missouri Botanical Garden and forgot to write down the cultivar. Arrgh!

What a sultry center. The stamens look almost like a sea urchin... or teeny tiny french fries.

Lastly, here’s my lil red Yamaha parked next to Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’, at Magnolia Folly. This tree is over 2 stories tall and LOADED with flowers. Kind of a neighborhood showpiece!  I had ridden over to my folks’ house on a balmy spring day, and the only downside to riding is that you can’t bring home a bouquet...

I want to add that most of the Magnolias shown here, and MANY MANY MORE are available by mailorder from my favorite nursery of all time, Klehm’s Song Sparrow. Here is a link directly to the Magnolia offerings on their website. Go here for inspiration — and maybe pick out a tree or two!

Ok, that’s it for the show and tell. Now let’s get to the stamp set inspired by all this beauty! Presenting, Planning for Magnolias.

http://powerpoppy.com/products/planning-for-magnolias

I’ve clipped a branch straight off the tree, and whether you color it in pink, purple, yellow, white, coral, or any combination thereof, I think you’ll find this stamp a pretty addition to your stamping garden! There isn’t a ton of complicated shading on these plants, so this set works well when you don’t want to invest too much time, but still want a showy card or creation. Other images in this Planning for Magnolias have a more casual take... and one features a fun “planner” scene inspired by the kinds of tabletop set-ups we have all over our house... open books, calendars, journals with lots of cute stuff spilling out all over the place. Only this one has a Magnolia stellata along for the ride.

Oh, hey look!! The Bloom Brigade is breezing in to show us some of the many ideas you can try with this set of flowering Magnolias and friendly sentiments.

TAKE IT AWAY, BLOOMIES!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you’ll make a note to come on back tomorrow, for something a bit folksy, fun, and just a little bit “crewel.”

A Special Note:
It is with the heaviest heart that I must share with you this news. My beloved mother, Susan H. Smith, passed away on February 6th. You can read my special post about Mom’s life here. We cannot thank you enough for the prayers and good thoughts everyone has been sending.

With love and beauty to all of you... my sweet friends.
