12 Days of Christmas - Day 9!

Hello all! Hope these 12 days of Christmas the Power Poppy way are just making your heart bubble with holiday inspiration! I am popping on the Power Poppy Blog today for DAY 9 to share some clean and classy creations from Christine Okken. We all know that Christmas cards can prove challenging when it comes to layers and postage and just getting a larger creation in the mail. So, Christine is peeling the layers back, literally, to show us you can have a "WOW" creation without a ton of extras. And, to make it even easier, she used one stamp set --  Cuddle in the Cabin -- to create 4 different and beautiful cards.

Let's first take a peek at this beautiful set! Its imagery is so serene with a retreat in the woods just sitting and waiting for you to enjoy! What's wonderful about this set is that there are so many interchangeable scenes that you can create with just this ONE set!

For those who love digital sets instead of clear, GOOD NEWS! These images are available in digital format as well HERE!

So, let's get right to the magic that Christine created!

CARD 1

In this creation, Christine stamped the tree from the set multiple times using Rustic Wilderness Distress Ink on watercolor paper. Now, here's the fun part. She used a water brush to drag down the color from the ink to ground the images and give it so much depth. Brilliant! Add a little torn-edge on the paper, a wee bit of bling and you have a card that just screams classy!

CARD 2

This creation is not only a breath of fresh air with those cool tones, it just underscores Christine's artistic talent. First, she stamped the sentiment from the set onto watercolor paper, added some color to the open block letters with some watercolor and then, added the watercolor pine branches to form a wreath by hand. I have never done this myself, but seeing how beautiful it is, I am tempted to try freehanding like she did! I am pretty sure I'd need to lightly trace a circle first before I started the handpainting. She used Daniel Smith Watercolor paints and then embossed the sequins to serve as the "berries" on the wreath from the Let it Glow stamp set. If you aren't brave enough to try hand painting, you could use the elements from the Enchanted Branches Nativity to try crafting a wreath with stamps!

CARD 3

Well, it really doesn't get more simple than this beautiful creation above! Christine stamped the Be Still scene, colored with Copics and Prismacolor pencils and... ta-da! Fini! I love the visual effect she created by coloring in the sky to create that round effect above the mountainscape.

CARD 4

I don't know about you, but I think there's something whimsical about stamping on dark papers and using light pencils or even bleach (as Christine did) to help create contrast. This card is the perfect example of that! Christine stamped and embossed the cabin from this set on navy card stock, painted bleach into the highlights and light sources for the moonlight and lamplight glow and then used white acrylic paint splatters to serve as her snow! She then used white ink for the sentiment (from the Let it Glow stamp set). The whole effect is soft and inviting! Christine did want to point out when using bleach, sometimes the bleach reacts differently with different papers. It's not a bad idea to test drive the bleach on a scrap before you begin. In this case, the effect is not white but more cream or light yellow, which is perfect for the glowing moon!

I hope you've enjoyed these clean and classy and easy to replicate creations using, for the most part, just one stamp set! So creative and fun!

Creative Confetti: Feeling Fall

Hello all and happiest of Tuesdays to you! Well, yesterday we ushered in the first day of Fall. So now, we can officially love all things pumpkin spice, spicy scented candles and, of course, sweater weather! In honor of this change of seasons, I thought there was no better time than now to have a kick-off celebration and use Creative Confetti to really ramp up our use of fall-themed stamps or color schemes! So, without further ado, check out this week's challenge!

HOW TO PLAY: It's just as simple as the graphic suggests, create with Fall in mind! It could be an image. It could be a color scheme. It could be using fall themed embellishments! It's just as easy as that!

On to our creations for the week!

Because this season is so beautiful, I thought I would share some fall-themed creations, not just from me but from some of the Bloomies to show you just how far you can take the challenge this week!

I absolutely love this creation from Ally Cope using Power Poppy's Fortunes of Fall  stamp set! For those digi lovers, this beautiful-for-fall stamp also comes in a digital format and it's called Maize for Days! This card is a perfect reminder to not only celebrate the season but to show some love to the shades of colored pencils that might not get a ton of use!

Check out this masterpiece by Christine Okken, using Power Poppy's Olive and Oak digital stamp set.  I love how Christine can make any Copic creation almost have that dreamy watercolor feel. Sigh.... just too pretty!

This image above that Stacy Morgan captured so well called Fall Wellies is a heart-warming homage to autumn -- a time when we kick up our rain boots, taking a few fallen leaves with them! I adore how she not only colored up the fall leaves on the image perfectly but added a few as embellishments to boot! (pun intended).

For my creation, (which is one I actually did a while back), I chose to use just some bits of the Olive and Oak expanded stamp set.  I kept the design rather simple, letting the mix of patterns work their magic. I let the sentiment be the focal point and then adorned the die-cut and sponged panel with the cluster of leaves and acorns in this set. The Bible verse in this set is one of my absolute favorites!

Okay folks,  now it's your turn to enjoy "Feeling Fall!" Remember, after you create and play along, link up your project using the linky below so we can all see. Every entry is one more shot at a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! Woo hoo!

AND... a little teaser for you! You're going to want to check in on October 1st! Marcy will have a digital extravaganza -- releasing more fall-themed images for you to enjoy!

Also, I mentioned this last week! DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR AN UPCOMING CHALLENGE? Email me at juliekoerber@gmail.com and fill me in! If your idea is used, we'll honor you on our blog for the week! Now don't be shy! I can't wait to hear your ideas! We already got a couple of emails and we can't wait to share!

Until next time,
~Julie

Kaleidoscope of GOOD VIBES!!

Hello sweet peeps! Are you ready for the weekend? This woman sure is! I don't know about you but if you have a job, that day job can sure get in the way of creating a little holiday cheer for others! ;-) So, I plan to make up for it over the next few days. Have you been holiday stamping? Baking? Shopping? Creating anything? If you celebrate the season, are you ready? Leave us a little comment below -- let us know what you cherish about this most magical time of year! Do you have a favorite holiday recipe? Hey! We'd love to hear! And, if you like, share the recipe in the comments for all to enjoy!

Okay, moving on, it's been a few weeks since we've offered up some Good Vibes to let all those warm fuzzies rise to the top, so I am super excited to share a few. Psst... truth be told, I have a few more than five! ;-)

Your Good Vibe Hit List

1. Peace Painting With 13 inches of fresh snow in the Great White North where Christine resides, she's loving the winter wonderland just outside her window. And, my friends, that sparked this gorgeous painting using Power Poppy's Ultimate Poinsetta digital stamp. She blew up the image to create a watercolor wonder that she framed to get in the Christmas spirit. Click HERE to see this project in its full glory!

2. Holiday Shenanigans What happens when an off-duty firefighter dresses like Buddy the Elf, grabs two pillows and hits a public square in Boston? CLICK HERE and get ready for a case of the giggles. Who couldn't use a little laugh, right? This one is priceless! A good vibe indeed!

3. Plantin’ Fanatic! Have you been following all the folly with our Power Poppy Peep in Chief and her 2000 bulbs she planted this past week that she hopes will sprout for spring? If not, yes, she did indeed plant that many bulbs and if you look at the photo above, she even had time to create some hand-lettered plant stakes on top of the planting frenzy! Can I bottle up her energy please? Psst, if you like hand-lettering things, this might be the perfect gift for the green thumb in your life!

4. Shining a Light We just had to share this beautiful creation above that the folks at Kit & Clowder created for the Cancer Council Queensland where folks travel in for treatment. How inspiring is it to see others share their time and talent with those battling some big things in life? We were touched and honored that Alyce, the Chief over at Kit & Clowder chose Power Poppy's digital stamp set Hollyberries to create this beautiful duo!

5. Marcy’s Magic Pencil  You might think that Marcella is all aglow with the season and simply has no time to draw. Well, my friends, think again! This rough illustration above was ripped from her sketchbook this week and word on the street is, it is the inspiration for the next digital stamp that will be released TOMORROW! So, be sure to stop by and see how this little sketch above turned into a full-blown digital stamp perfection!

Before we let you go, I do have -- as I mentioned before -- just one more good vibe before we call it quits here for the day!

Power Poppy is super excited to be a part of Kit and Clowder’s Advent Calendar of Craft Giveaways! As a part of the festivities, we are giving away a free digital stamp - a beautiful dogwood composition designed by yours truly! Come join the fun -- it's open to everyone -- over on the Kit & Clowder Facebook Page HERE  and follow the steps to get your free stamp! While you're there, request to be a member of the group. Oh, and we also want to send some extra special well wishes to the amazing colorista Amy Shulke! Poor Amy has been suffering from some severe arm pain and it's so bad she's had to put her online classes on hold. Get well Ms. Amy! We are praying for a super speedy recovery for you!

And that, my friends, is it! Thanks for popping in to share in this week's Good Vibes! Kathy Racoosin will be in the house as we kick off the week for another edition of Inspire Me Monday! Let's Rock A New Color Combo!

Hello happy stampers! Are you ready to rock a brand new color combo this week? In about 1.2 seconds you'll see I did a pretty masterful play on words there. Hehe! We are ready to usher in a new set of color cues for you to use the next time you hit up your snappy little stamping spaces!

So, let's check it out, shall we?

  • So, you might ask, what is this that we are showing you a picture of above? Well, this is a gorgeous shot from the Smithsonian of what they call Variscite. I had never heard of it before but Ms. Marcella snapped this photo on a trip last summer to that fabulous place and then asked if it was too late in her life to become a "rock nerd?" That girl. I tell you. She just seizes life and dives into all the things that fascinate her with reckless abandon. Love it.

HOW TO PLAY: Playing along with us is so easy. See the colors. Be inspired. Use them. Link up your creation. Let us all be wowed. Drop the mic. Fade out. Yep, just that easy!

Today we have the honor and privilege of having the AMAZINGLY talented Christine Okken in the house to show a card that perfectly depicts this little color combo. Take a look, will you?? With Father's Day fast approaching. You might want to CASE (copy and steal everything) when it comes to this design. Christine used Power Poppy's digital stamp set Leaping Trout to create this card showcasing one of nature's wonders! How can trout fly? Really?

I love all the little extras Christine added to her card without even an ounce of making it look overdone. Sheer perfection!

Here's a closeup so you can see all detail Christine added fabulously with her Copic markers!

And here's a look at the colors she used to bring this trout to life!

So, sweet friends, want to pick up these serene and earthy colors and play along with us this week? Simply use this color combo, create, and then link up your card below! Who knows, your card might be chosen as one of our faves and you might end up guest hostessing this little post one day soon! Each guest blogger gets a color palette to create with along with a digital stamp set of their choice! Fun stuff, right?

FYI: If you want to take a trip back through past Hues to Use, just click that link. Remember, the linky is never ending, meaning you can play along whenever you feel like it! Why not challenge yourself to take a color-coded trip through all of our past challenges? Now THAT would be fun! ;-)

Power & Spark with a bit of Drama!

Hello sweet stamping friends! Are you ready for a brand-spankin' new Power & Spark Challenge to kick off an entire month of creativity? Well, lucky for you, we are ready to usher one in!  I have to say this month lends itself to being a little BOLD, a little DARING and a lot DRAMATIC! Christine Okken is stepping in to offer up this month's challenge so, without further ado, here's what she's got on tap!

HOW TO PLAY: Our "Black and White with a Pop of Color" Challenge is pretty self-explanatory and super simple from a creative standpoint -- make your card or creation mostly black and white but then surprise us all with that pop of color! Want to hear what Ms. Christine has to say? Well, here she is.....

"I love the drama of black and white, and I’ve been seeing a lot of this gorgeous colour combination lately (maybe it’s been because I’m in mourning over Chip & JoJo's Fixer Upper show being done (she loves her black and white). Lately, I’ve noticed black and white with splashes of dramatic colour mixed in. So, this month I’m challenging you to go Black and White in your cardmaking, with just a splash of another colour highlighted in your design. You can use grayscale to add definition to your black and white elements, but make sure some part of your design has a splash of one colour - any color!” ~Christine

And, as we love to do when we unveil a new challenge, we let the hostess share how she's bringing this challenge to life! Check out Christine's creation using Power Poppy's Peony Muse stamp set. Oh my! I absolutely love those shades of grey and the literal splashes of pink. Christine has such a way with color -- even at its most basic-- black and white -- level!

$50 shopping spree to the Power Poppy Shop!

Here on DAY SIX, I’ve chosen to create a garland for Christmas to decorate a mantle. As I was dreaming up some ideas I decided to make my garland a little whimsical and add some homemade pom poms to the garland as accents, which I’ll also show you how to create.

To start with I used Marcy’s gorgeous new set, Winter Wonderland. After stamping it on XPress It Blending Cardstock (twice), then colouring it with Copics, I trimmed out one of the designs and then cut out some of the coloured pieces from the second stamped image, popping them up overtop of the original spray for dimension. I set that aside and started working on my letters.

Using my Silhouette die cutting machine, I cut out three large white letters spelling JOY. You don’t even need a special file to do this, just the alphabet/letter function on the Silhouette. It’s great because you can spell out any word you like in a variety of fonts. Each of the letters I cut is about 7"wide x 8 1/2” tall. I used heavier coverstock weight cardstock for sturdiness. Then I stamped the Winter Wonderland stamp on to the J and the Y in SU Rich Razzleberry ink.

Next, I took a Tim Holtz Stencil (Flourish), some embossing paste and glitter and added some pretty sparkly dimension to the letters, giving it some time to dry. Funny story, in all my years of creating I’ve never spilled too much glitter, but on this project I accidently dumped a whole container of glitter everywhere. Let’s just say, “sparkle for days."

I gave each letter a border of Rich Razzleberry paper to give them even more stability.

For the O, after adding the sparkly dimension, I placed the spray of flowers on the left-hand side of the letter attaching using foam dots.

These next photos give you a bit of of better look a the colouring and the dimension in the spray.

As beautiful as the stamp looks coloured, it’s equally as lovely stamped in a single colour because of how detailed it is.  I also think it helps the garland from becoming too fussy by only adding one coloured up image.

I thought I’d show you how I threaded the ribbon, or yarn in this case, through the back of each letter. I cut a little rectangle of paper 2” x 3 “ and scored each side twice along the narrow way to create a popped up channel for the ribbon to go through. This works well if you don’t want to put holes into your letters to form the banner. I adhered them with Scor Tape so they’ll really stay put.

Now I’ll show you how to create the pom poms. Maybe you remember creating them when you were little? All you need to start with is some sturdy cardboard. I just cut up a Kraft Dinner box and folded it over in the middle and glued it together. You could also use a heavier cardboard box and it would hold up even better. You want it to be able to withstand the tension of the yarn wrapped around it.

The size of your cardboard determines the size of your finished pom poms.  This cardboard is about 2 3/4” by 3 1/2”.  Cut a small slit in the middle of the cardboard.  This is where you’ll tie your pom pom together in the centre.

Wrap your yarn around the cardboard. You can use any type of yarn, of any width or weight.  The weight you use will influence how fluffy it gets, but it’s fun to experiment with different kinds of yarn.  For these pom poms, I’ve wrapped a chunky type of yarn about 12 rows wide about in 3 - 4 different passes or layers.  You want it to be quite puffy so that you have a nice full pom pom.

Next cut a length of yarn about a foot long.  Scooch your yarn together toward the center of the cardboard from each side, so you can see the slit you’ve cut, on both sides of the bundle of yarn.  Tuck one end of your cut length through each side of the bundle in the slit, and cinch the bundle together in the middle by pulling your cut ends of the foot of ribbon tight.

Cinch it as tight as you can together and tie a tight knot in the middle.  How tight you tie it will help create the puffiness of your pom pom.

I also slip the ends you just tied through the slit in the cardboard to the opposite side, then cinch that up as tight as I can and tie it again to really keep the center firm.

Next, take a sharp scissor and cut open the bundle of yarn at each side of the cardboard to make your puffy pom pom.  Slip that off the cardboard form.

Now its time for your pom pom to get a hair cut!  If you trim the ends it will have a more round uniform ball look.

So cute!  Repeat till you have as many pom poms as you’d like.  It’s actually really quick to do and kids will enjoy doing it as well.  My pom poms are about 3 1/2 inches diameter finished.

All you need to do to form the garland is take a long length of yarn (about 5 - 6 feet depending on how long you want your garland, take a needle with a wide eye and thread the yarn or ribbon through the center of the pom poms and letters alternately and you’re done!

Now, if you create a Christmas themed garland, be sure to link up your creation HERE and show us so that you can enter our 12 Days of Christmas Power & Spark Challenge. There are so many ways to play this month -- 12 in fact -- so let's spread a little cheer and share some homemade charm!

Wishing each of you great JOY this season!

Christine
